The Center for Performing Arts Bonita Springs welcomes back the hilarious Southern comedy SOUTHERN GOTHIC NOVEL, Saturday, September 17 at 8:00pm. The play is written and performed by Frank Blocker and directed by Cheryl King of Manhattan's Stage Left Studio where the play ran for 18 months and received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance.
The play performed this past January at The Center and included an intermission where audiences enjoyed a special drink offering at the bar, the "Southern Gothic Navel." The laugh-a-minute second act began with an audience talkback that morphed into a mixture of improvisation, monologues and storytelling. Thanks to overwhelming audience response, The Center has added a one night only performance in the Moe Auditorium and Film Center.
Blocker plays all 17 roles-including a June bug-in this pot-boiler/comedy/dime store romance/free-for-all-delivering laugh after laugh while keeping the audience guessing. The New York Times called the play, "Flawlessly executed." Show Business Weekly considered it, "At least an HBO Special."
GOTHIC has been performed throughout the country including Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Columbus, and debuted in New York City at the International Fringe Festival. Blocker received an Ovation Recommendation from the LA Stage Alliance and acting and writing awards from the Columbus National Theatre Festival.
Look for Blocker in the upcoming monthly comedy/variety show Frankly Funny Fridays at The Center, beginning October 21. Frankly Funny Fridays features Don Fox, Patrick Kohler and Marina Miller. Blocker also premieres his hit Off-Broadway show Stabilized Not Controlled at The Center in January. Stabilized ran for two years at Ms. King's Stage Left Studio.
Blocker teaches improvisation, acting and writing workshops at the Center for the Arts. An established playwright, his works include off-Broadway's Eula Mae's Beauty, Bait & Tackle, Patient Number, book to the musical Alice with composer William Wade, and adaption HP Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. A veteran stage actor, he most recently appeared in a cameo for the movie Tales of Halloween. While his dog, not to be outdone, made his movie debut in the indie-horror flick Boned. He appeared off-Broadway in Eula Mae's..., Southern Gothic Novel (also nominated for Audience Favorite Award by BroadwayWorld!), and The Deep Throat Sex Scandal. He also appeared in many Peculiar Works Project installations and was co-producer of the Stage THIS! short play series..
