In addition to the previously announced signed performance, Florida Repertory Theatre is proud to present an audio description service for William Gibson's hopeful and uplifting true story, "The Miracle Worker" on the same Sunday, March 4 performance at 2 PM in the Historic Arcade Theatre.
"We are very appreciative to the Alliance for the Arts and to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center of Fort Myers (DHHC) for helping to make this possible," says
Brendan Powers, Florida Rep's Community Outreach Coordinator. "It is a wonderfully rewarding collaboration."
There will be 15 headsets available for visually impaired patrons and a section of the theatre will be held for hearing impaired patrons.
According to the American Council of the Blind, audio description involves the accessibility of the visual images of theater, television, movies, and other art forms for people who are blind, have low vision, or who are otherwise visually impaired. It is a narration service, provided at no additional charge to the patron, which guides the listener through the presentation with concise, objective descriptions of new scenes, settings, costumes, body language, and "sight gags," all slipped in between portions of dialogue.
Stephen Hooper, last seen in Florida Rep's production of "12 Angry Men," will be the audio describer present for this performance.
"The Miracle Worker" is the timeless American classic about the inspiring true story of how a determined teacher was able to save young Helen Keller from her isolated silence. Just before the turn of the 20th century, desperate for help, the Keller Family hires a young woman to help their blind and deaf daughter learn to communicate with the outside world.
Annie Sullivan sees that Helen is more than a violent child trapped behind a wall, and against tremendous odds, she frees Helen's spirit and opens her mind. The multiple Tony-winning play is a moving, inspirational, and electrifying story of perseverance, friendship, and hope.
"The Miracle Worker" is generously sponsored by Naomi Bloom &
Ron Wallace.
The audio described and signed performance will be held on Sunday, March 4 at 2PM in the Historic Arcade Theatre.
