The origins of this work lie in artist Olivier Debré’s desire to translate into a series of paintings the feeling elicited in him by a smile, the first of the ‘signs’. Inspired by these flamboyant landscape paintings depicting various parts of the world in terms of sensibilities and moods, choreographer Carolyn Carlson sets her dancers in motion to an original score by Réné Aubry and brings the dreamlike work to life. Now a cult ballet in the Paris Opera’s repertoire, Signes is the unchallenged representation of the close-knit relationship between painting, music and dance, allowing these art forms to interact on stage and broaden each other’s horizons.
