French choreographer Michel Kelemenis practises an exquisite and refined style of dance, as Geneva audiences may remember from his 2009 Cinderella at the Grand Théâtre. With Marius Petipa in 1876, Mendelssohn’s stage music for Shakespeare’s whirlwind comedy of fairies, gentlefolk and mechanicals entered the great Russian ballet tradition. Michel Kelemenis and the Grand Théâtre de Genève Ballet Company, with guest ensemble Basel Sinfonietta, are now poised to dance their way back to the Shakespearian fantasy roots of the piece, but in the present tense.
