The Elgin Fringe Festival is an uncurated, lottery-based festival dedicated to bold artistic experimentation and innovation. The festival showcases a diverse range of performance art, including theatre, dance, comedy, music, and other undefined art forms, presented in intimate settings across downtown Elgin. Visual art is also a key part of the festival, with an exhibition at Side Street Studio’s Gallery during festival week.
As part of the global Fringe movement, Elgin Fringe provides a platform for independent artists to share their work in a welcoming and inclusive environment. All ticket proceeds go directly to the artists, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to supporting creative expression. Performances take place in walkable venues across downtown Elgin, including pubs, cafes, galleries, and performance spaces, adding to the immersive experience of the festival.
Applications for the 2025 Elgin Fringe Festival are open from February 1 to March 1. There is no application fee, and artists are selected through a lottery system based on artist location and representation. Lottery categories include Equity-Seeking Artists (BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists), Local Artists (within 50 miles of Elgin), and Touring Artists (outside the 50-mile radius). Artists not selected via the lottery are automatically placed on a waitlist.
To apply, artists must provide a short description of their work, estimated length, and the number of performances requested (1-3). Accepted artists will be notified within 90 days of the lottery. Performances must be original, between 15-60 minutes, and adaptable to the festival’s venues, which have limited technical capabilities and no storage space for sets or props.
The Elgin Fringe Festival ensures that 100% of ticket sales go directly to the artists. A one-time $4 Festival Entry Button is required for audience members to purchase tickets, helping cover festival expenses. Production fees are required upon acceptance and vary by performance type:
Production fees must be paid via Venmo, Zelle, check, or credit card. Limited financial assistance is available for first-time Fringe producers. Performances are scheduled by festival staff, and all ticket sales are managed through Fringe Central.
Volunteers are essential to the success of Elgin Fringe, assisting with ticketing, ushering, and venue management. By volunteering, individuals gain access to performances, contribute to the local arts scene, and help make the festival an inclusive and engaging experience for both artists and audiences. More information on volunteering opportunities is available at elginfringefestival.com.
