WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME
In reference to the character descriptions below—most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide (Language developed by Kevin Kantor and Emily Tarquin from the Actors Theatre of Louisville).
SYNOPSIS: Earnest and polite high schooler Heidi put herself through college by winning debates about the Constitution. Now an adult, she revisits her teenage self to trace the generational impact America’s founding document has had on her life. Civic duty is on full display as this witty and interactive new play builds to a live debate between Heidi and an actual teen, allowing “we the people” to decide how to move forward.
HEIDI - she/her. 40s. Based on Heidi Schreck, a former teen debate champion who travelled the country giving speeches about the Constitution. Engaging, dynamic, smart, passionate, and witty. Alternates between her teen and adult self throughout the play. Based on playwright Heidi Schreck.
MIKE - he/him. Any Ethnicity. 40s-50s. Heidi’s friend. First appears as an assertive American Legionnaire monitor, a stickler for the rules. Later turns into Heidi’s ally and assistant, reflective and genuine.
TEEN DEBATER - she/her and/or they/them. Any ethnicity. To play a 13-18 year old high school debater. Appears only in Act 2. Will need to have some onstage experience, ideally in speech and debate and theatre. Comfortable with and willing to improvise within the confines of the show.
NOTE: We will be looking to cast between 2 and 3 TEEN DEBATERS, and each would have their own performances
