Breakdown

EVE MADISON: 50 year old African American woman; ex-wife of J.P. Madison. She exudes confidence, health, energy, and sensuality. A woman in her prime, she is bigger than life, a free spirit and a true Force of Nature. When married to J.P., she was a legend in the social scene of Atlanta. However, since the divorce she has been living in the Bay Area for two years and her style is California bohemian of the 70's.

LENA JEFFERSON: 35 year old African American woman; campaign operative. Great at her job. Loves the rush of getting out the vote, helping people to understand their civic duty, but not the compromises and the drama that follows the election. A cynic, she considers herself a failed romantic.

JOHN NELSON: 35 year old African American man; junior law partner of J.P. Madison. Though desperately in love with J.P.'s young wife, Ann, he stands ready to meet the political challenges ahead but is willing to throw caution to the wind, give it all up and run away with her at the drop of a hat.

“J.P.” MADISON: 50 year old African American man; lawyer, campaign advisor to Maynard Jackson. On the short list for City Attorney. He lives, breathes and is politically driven by ambition to meet the demands of history. His chauvinistic tendencies and need to control are what caused his first marriage to fail. Though he won't admit it, he 'married' Ann to keep up appearances and prove to everyone that he was over Evie, his first wife.

ANN MADISON: 25 year old African American woman; 2nd wife of J.P. Madison. Her outward appearance suggests that of a woman twice her age. A country girl, she was the first in her family to go to school and become a secretary in a law firm. During a casual dinner, she is shocked by J.P.'s proposal and agrees to marry him out of admiration and respect. Though hopelessly in love with John, she is totally committed to her 'marriage' and her role in history.
