BREAKDOWN

Maria: (Latina female, age 18-21) A hopeless romantic and innocent young woman. A lovely, young, and obedient immigrant Puerto Rican girl, excited and enthusiastic about her new life in America, with an inner strength that allows her to evolve into a strong woman. Bernardo’s sister. Must be strong actress. (Vocal range: Soprano, Bb3-C6)

Anita: (Latina female, age 25-30) Feisty and assertive. She dispenses “older sister” advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo’s girlfriend and Maria’s friend. Wise in the ways of the world, flashy, sharp-tongued, with a knowing sexuality. Must be a very strong dancer. (Vocal range: Alto/Belt, F3-D5)

Tony: (Caucasian male, age 25-30) Romantic young man and former leader of the Jets, he has found a new lifestyle now. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. He discovers love for the first time with Maria. Genuinely sweet and sincere. (Vocal Range: Tenor, Bb2-Bb4)

Bernardo: (Latino male, age 25-30) Handsome, proud Puerto Rican man, formidable leader of the Sharks, with a sardonic chip on his shoulder. Bernardo seeks to protect his, his family and friends rights as Americans against the ignorance of the period. Maria’s brother and Anita’s boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks. Most be a strong dancer. (Vocal range: Bb2-Eb4)

Riff: (Caucasian male, age 25-30) A spritely, quick-tempered leader. Not accepting changes in his turf, he seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang’s dominance. Tony’s best friend. Must dance well. (Vocal range: Bb2-G4)

Chino: (Latino male, age 20-25) Shy, gentle, sweet-faced young boy with the utmost loyalty to Bernardo. A Puerto Rican immigrant who stands up when he needs to. He is the intended husband of Maria.

Ensemble: Seeking very strong dancers that sing well to inhabit the lives of the Jets and the Sharks.
