Equity actors for principal roles in the musicals in Village Theatre's 2023-24 Season. Musicals include BEAUTIFUL, THE FANTASTICKS, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND (see breakdown).

PREPARATION

Please bring a physical copy of your headshot and resume and please prepare two short song selections that demonstrate your vocal and storytelling abilities. The song selections should be no longer than one verse and one chorus each. A pianist will be provided, please bring sheet music in the proper key.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition. Equity’s contracts prohibit discrimination. BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical
mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas
are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.
Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the
extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and
dressing rooms.

BEAUTIFUL Character Breakdown:

Director & Choreographer: Lisa Shriver
Carole King: Female, late 20’s – early 30’s, Mezzo belter, white, An aspiring singer/songwriter. A
unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured,
unassuming and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a
passion for music.

Gerry Goffin: Male, late 20’s – early 30’s, tenor, white, Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and
eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for
more.

Barry Mann: Male, late 20’s – early 30’s, tenor, white, A songwriter who becomes romantically involved
with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable.

Cynthia Weil: Female, late 20’s – early 30’s, mezzo soprano belter, white, A songwriter who becomes
romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick
wit. She is self-confident, sarcastic, and extremely likeable.

Don Kirschner: Male, late 40’s – 60’s, baritenor, white, An influential music publisher and producer. He
is a fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real
affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker.

Genie Klein: Female, 40’s – 50’s, white, Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has
been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her
husband’s mistakes.

Ensemble members play various roles such as singers, musicians, and other people found throughout
the music industry. Some of the roles for ensemble members include: Janelle Woods, Marilyn Wald,
Lou Adler, The Drifters, The Shirelles, The Righteous Brothers, Little Eva and others. Specific roles
such as The Drifters, The Shirelles, Janelle Woods, and Little Eva.

THE FANTASTICKS Character Breakdown:

The role of El Gallo is already cast

Director: Adam Immerwahr
Note from the Director, Adam Immerwahr: “For this production of The Fantasticks we will be working
with a largely revised unpublished script that removes the racial slurs and undertones originally written
into this piece. One of the things we’ll be exploring with the artists working on the piece is the
complexity of how the character of Luisa is referred to, treated, and portrayed.”

The Girl (Luisa): Female, 20’s, Soprano, Any ethnicity, A button-maker's young and pretty daughter,
she is a romantic idealist who falls in love with Matt. She is naive, yet honest and tender.

The Boy (Matt): Male, 20’s, Tenor, Any ethnicity, An innocent, young man who is searching for love and
adventure. A bright guy, but naive and even foolish at times, approaching situations with a false
bravado.

The Boy's Father (Hucklebee): Male, 50’s - 60’s, Baritone, Any ethnicity, A former boisterous navy man
and meticulous gardener who fakes a fight with Bellomy in hopes of getting their children to fall in love.

The Girl's Father (Bellomy): Male, 50’s – 60’s, Baritone, Any ethnicity, A fastidious button-maker and
also a picky gardener who fakes a fight with Hucklebee in hopes of getting their children together.

The Actor (Henry): Male, 50’s-70’s, Any ethnicity, An aging, over-the-top Thespian who specializes in
reciting Shakespeare, he is a commedia clown; his world is the stage and he knows no other reality.

The Man Who Dies (Mortimer): Male, 30’s-50’s, Any ethnicity, Henry's goofy sidekick and another
former actor who specializes in stage deaths. A commedia clown, his world is the stage and he does
not live in reality.

The Mute: Any Gender, 20’s – 50’s, Any Ethnicity, A speechless presence who watches, acts as the
wall, and deals with props; the invisible stage assistant. Should be able to easily assist in the story or
fade into the background unnoticed. Note: Strong physicality is required.

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND Character Breakdown:

Director: TBA

Once On This Island takes place on islands in the Caribbean Sea known as the French Antilles. The
cast should represent the diversity found within the Black community of that region.

Ti Moune: Female, 20’s, mezzo-soprano high belt, Peasant girl and who our story revolves around.
She falls in love with Daniel Beauxhomme, and makes a promise to the gods to save his life.

Daniel Beauxhomme: Male, 20’s, Tenor, Wealthy male and romantic lead. He falls in love with Ti
Moune after she saves his life, but he’s been promised to Andrea since they were children. Not a bad
guy.

Asaka: Female, Mezzo/Soprano, The Mother of the Earth. She guides Ti Moune on land to find Daniel
– big bawdy presence with an amazing belt and a great sense of humor.

Agwe: Male, Baritone, The God of Water, he guides Ti Moune and provides the place where Daniel
and Ti Moune meet.

Erzulie: Female, Soprano, The Goddess of Love, she wins the bet with the gods that love is stronger
than death. She is the nicest of the gods.

Papa Ge: Male, Tenor, A God and the sly demon of death. He plans to take Daniel Beauxhommes’ life
to prove to all the gods that death is stronger than love.

Mama Euralie: Female, Alto, Peasant. The adoptive mother of Ti Moune, with a strong belief in the
gods. Wife of Tonton Julian.

Tonton Julian: Male, Baritone, Peasant farmer, the adoptive father of Ti Moune. Husband of Mama
Euralie.

Andrea Deveraux: Female, Mezzo, A wealthy beauxhomme, she is the well-to-do fiance of Daniel
Beauxhomme and a great dancer. She will also play Armand Beauxhomme’s wife.

Armand Beauxhomme: Male, Baritone, A wealthy beauxhomme, he is the careless Frenchman who
came to the island. He leaves behind a terrible curse. He also plays Daniel’s father.

Youth auditions for the role of Young Ti Moune will be held later in the season.
