Breakdown

With just a ticket, a suitcase, and a heart full of expectation, Violet Karl waits for a Greyhound bus in Spruce Pine, North Carolina in 1964. As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved, she's now ready to travel across the Deep South to Tulsa, where she aims to find a miracle - the healing touch of a TV evangelist that will make her beautiful. The musical chronicles her journey and the colorful characters she meets on the way. Though she does not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet finds a beauty within herself. Her quest leads her to meet a young, African-American Soldier whose love for her reaches far past her physical imperfections.

VIOLET – Caucasian female, 20 - 35, mezzo. The title character, a young North Carolina woman whose face was scarred in a childhood accident. She is stubborn and prickly, but filled with equal parts hope and obsession that she may heal and be made beautiful. Dreams of love and believes that miracles are possible. Principal.
Range: G3 - F5

FLICK – African American male, 20 - 30, baritone. A Soldier. He falls in love with Violet and wants to protect her from the cruelty of the world in which they live, but is too shy or reserved to tell her so. A good hearted man who is always willing to stand up for others, but not yet ready to go after what he wants. A gentleman. Principal.
Range: C4 - E6

MONTY – Caucasian male, 20 - 30, tenor. A paratrooper and Flick’s friend from basic training. Good looking, charming but rough around the edges. He too falls for Violet, but in a less ingenuous way than Flick. A playboy who is used to getting what he wants. Doesn’t understand consequences for himself or that his actions may cause others. Principal
Range: A3 - G5

YOUNG VI – Caucasian, to play early teens, mezzo soprano. Plays Violet at a young age, prior to the accident. Not quite as guarded or prickly as her older self, but still tough and stubborn. She has a keen curiosity and the rough edges of being brought up solely by her father.
Range: A3 - E5

FATHER – Caucasian male, 35 – 45, baritone. Violet’s father. A simple, widowed man who lovingly raises his daughter alone doing the best he can with the little knowledge and resources he has to do so. Stern but friendly, smart but uneducated. Accidentally scars Violet’s face while he is chopping wood.
