BREAKDOWN

NOTE: All actors should be good movers.

QUANG- Male, early 30’s – 40’s Asian American, strong, handsome, sexy and quick witted Vietnamese leading man. More sensitive than he initially leads on. Good sense of humor and not afraid to stand up for what he believes and protect those he cares for. Plays younger and older version of himself. Ability to rap, uses a Vietnamese dialect in one scene.

TONG- Female, early 30’s – 40’s Asian American, blunt, beautiful, and badass Vietnamese leading lady. Her sense of humor is more straightforward and blunt compared to Quang’s. Does not want to admit to feeling alone in America, even though her sights are set on fitting into her new home. The men she surrounds herself with are there to fill the void and time. Ability to rap.

ASIAN GUY/AMERICAN GUY/ NHAN/ KHUE- Male, 20’s-40’s Asian American, plays the quirky and side kick to Quang who, while tends to be seen as a fool at moments, has the best intentions of keeping his best friend out of harm’s way. The strong need to care for others is also reflected in Khue, Tong’s younger brother, who’s devotion to his family and girlfriend forces him to sacrifice his safety for others happiness. Ability to play a range of characters.

ASIAN GIRL/ AMERICAN GIRL/ THU/ HUONG/ TRANSLATOR/ FLOWER GIRL- Female, 30’s-50’s, Asian American, spends much of the show as Tong’s bullheaded and flirtatious mother who had no wanting to flee from Vietnam and come to America. Hoong is a great storyteller, her stories are extreme, she is the “Fred Sanford” of the family. Also portrays Thu, Quang’s protective and dedicated wife whom he left behind in Vietnam when he was forced to flee. Ability to play a range of characters.

PLAYWRIGHT/GIAI/ BOBBY/ CAPTAIN CHAMBERS/ REDNECK BIKER/ HIPPIE DUDE- Male, 30’s-50’s, Asian American, plays the Americanized son of Vietnamese immigrant parents, Quang and Tong. In addition, portrays both sides of some of Tong’s lovers as Bobby, the sweet, kind, if clueless American soldier, and Giai, her desperate lover from Vietnam whom she could never commit to before leaving him to flee to America. Both are infatuated with Tong. Actor will play the bulk of the American characters whom are larger than life stereotypes of their personas. Great comedic timing and ability to jump from character to character is a must.
