Breakdown
The following roles only:
MASHA
Though named ‘Masha,’ the character is modeled more on Chekhov’s Madame Arkadina. Our Masha is a 50s-ish movie actress, a woman who has turned her entire life into a performance. Old enough to believably have had 5 marriages and be transitioning out of ‘leading romantic roles,’ she is a glamorous-looking, well-maintained cougar, slightly overripe, drying-out and fighting against it with every step; vain, overindulgent, self-centered, dimly aware she is on the decline. We need a Beverly Hills/Hollywood diva vs. a Broadway stage veteran. Comedy experience is essential. Actor must be someone who is comfortable playing in rehearsal and contributing to a strong sense of ensemble.
SPIKE
Spike appears very young (mid to late 20s). He must have great physical charm, exuberance, and a strong voice. Spike is the easy embodiment of an L.A./So. Cal/actor-model-surfer wannabe; cocky, vain, a puppy-dog who humps the furniture; Peter Pan with a big erection and a dim intelligence. Physically ripped, buff, masculine – a lifter, not a runner. Actor needs to be extremely physical, uninhibited, extroverted; the character is projecting sexual energy at everyone. Actor playing Spike should be a good dancer/mover, comfortable devising and performing physical comedy
