Tea at Five is a one-woman show that captures the essence of the legendary Katharine Hepburn at two pivotal points in her life.
KATHARINE HEPBURN (Female, 45 – 60) CAST seeking Offstage Understudy.
Act One (Age 31, 1938)
The young, fiercely independent, and ambitious Hepburn has just suffered a string of professional failures after a promising start in Hollywood. In her family home in Fenwick, CT, she reflects on her turbulent career, family history, and determination to reclaim her place as a star.
Key traits:
• Charismatic, witty, and sharp-tongued
• Vulnerable beneath her self-assured exterior
• Deeply tied to her New England roots
• A restless and intense performer navigating rejection with equal parts humor and grit
Act Two (Age 76, 1983)
An older, reflective Hepburn, now a revered Hollywood icon, recounts her life story with candor and grace. She reflects on her career highs, her relationships — including her enduring love for Spencer Tracy — and the toll of aging. Despite the physical limitations she faces from tremors and illness, her intelligence and indomitable spirit shine through.
Key traits:
• Wry, self-deprecating, and deeply insightful
• Wiser, more contemplative, yet still mischievous
• Graceful and dignified but realistic about her fragility
• Fiercely independent, even as she faces loneliness and mortality
The role of Katharine Hepburn in Tea at Five is both a celebration of the icon's legacy and a study of resilience, artistry, and vulnerability. Bringing to life the public persona of the Hollywood legend while revealing the complexities of the private woman behind the myth.
