Breakdown

Show Description:
Roger Morgan was a smooth-talking young promoter who built Seattle’s most famous icon for the 1962 fair. Thirty-nine years later in the shadow of his Space Needle, the Seattle raconteur is a mayoral candidate dogged by an unscrupulous young reporter looking for long-buried dirt.

The play takes place in scenes occurring in 1962 and 2001. All members of the ensemble will play characters in these two time periods, and sometimes the same character aged almost four decades.

ROGER MORGAN: In 1962 at age 34, he is a comparatively young mover and shaker who is almost single-handedly responsible for the building of the Space Needle and ushering the World’s Fair into Seattle. A philanthropist, civic booster and non-partisan activist, Roger is good-natured, outgoing and charismatic. In 2001 at age 73, he retains all the energy and zest of his youth, and is running for mayor of the city.

HELEN GULANOS (Female - 35 - 40’s in 2001): A journalist, newly hired at the P.I. Helen has a young son and a past she is reticent to share. Helen is not afraid to make enemies to get what she wants, a trait which in retrospect, she often feels guilty about. Ambitious and a bit self-absorbed, she nonetheless possesses a good heart.

TEDDY SEVERSON: In 1962 at 37, he is Roger’s best friend and avid supporter. Teddy takes no lip, believes steadfastly in what he thinks is right, and stands up for candor and plain talk. In 2001 at age 76 he runs Roger‘s mayoral campaign, his affection for Roger has not diminished. Teddy often speaks before he thinks, often to the detriment of the situation.

BIRNBAUM (Female - 40’s in 2001): A Senior Editor at the P.I., and Helen’s superior. Birnbaum has to juggle an affection for Helen with he demands of her position, which often put her at odds with the new reporter. Birnbaum is hard-charging and seasoned in the business of print journalism.

MRS. MORGAN (In 1962, age 53, In 2001 age 92): Roger’s mother and avid booster of Roger’s aspirations through the decades. A woman inextricably tied to family and the small pleasures of life.

MEREDITH STEIN (In 1962, age 35, In 2001 age 74): Meredith is an outgoing woman full of the joy of life and the embracing of all things, taboo or otherwise. In 1962 she is the curator of an art gallery, the wife of a lawyer and Roger’s lover. In 2001, after decades of living her life separate from Roger, she re-emerges as a volunteer for his mayoral campaign.

LINDA (In 1962, age 25-30): Linda is Roger’s fiancee, working at a department store. Linda was born in Seattle, comes from a middle-class family, and possesses no real aspirations other than marrying well.She is probably more in love with the IDEA of being in love with Roger.

ANNIE (In 2001, age 25-30): Roger’s secretary. A whip-smart summa-cum-laude politically-minded free spirit, who is working far below her capabilities for Roger’s mayoral campaign, but she obviously likes and believes in her candidate unequivocally.

BILL STEELE (In 2001, age 35-40’s): Journalist in the newsroom at the P.I. Helen’s compatriot, fact-checker and editor, the back-story man.Been there awhile. Jaded, cynical, too smart for his own good, he nevertheless possesses a conscience and sense of fairness. Unafraid of pissing people off.

OMAR (In 2001, age 30-40): The executive director of Small Footprint, a one-man nonprofit advocating tiny cars and houses, less trash and fewer possessions. Has a crush on Helen, attracted to her independence and strength.

NED GANCE (In 1962, age 30-40): Assistant U.S. Attorney from Olympia, investigating Roger’s vice accusations at the request of his boss, the State Senator. Gance has delusions of Grandeur and would love to make a name for himself by busting the investigation wide open and making many arrests.

MALCOLM TURNER (In 1962, age 30-40): A big-deal industrial real estate broker, Malcolm has inside information on the route of the in-progress Seattle freeway (I-5), which has allowed him to buy up properties for cheap and build new projects in strategic locations to take advantage of freeway access. Roger’s buddy from school.

YATES (In 2001, age 55-70): A grey-pony tailed, caustic rabble-rouser who probably supports himself from various lawsuits he’s won against city departments, institutions and individuals. Concerned pretty exclusively with himself.

CHARLIE MCDANIEL (In 1962, age 45-55): Bartender at the J&M Tavern. Distressed at the graft that is going on in his bar and others in the city, McDaniel takes the payoff system as a personal degradation, and is civic-minded enough to want to do something about it.

DENNY CARMICHAEL (In 2001, age 70-85): A retired Seattle cop, Carmichael is living out his last days in a Spokane nursing home.Despite being a curmudgeon and a bulls hitter, Carmichael is razor-sharp and savvy about the ways of the world. He hasn’t lost a jot of his mental capabilities.

RICHARD DAWKINS (In 1962, age 50-60): Roger’s father currently serving a prison term in Las Vegas. A source of shame for Roger, Roger changed his name to escape the Dawkins legacy. Dawkins seizes every opportunity to win a bet or score on a short term swindle.
