Breakdown

Millie Davis:
mid-30s. African American. Millie knows how to make an entrance, but she’s discontented by her life—and especially by her career. She is politically active and aware, and deeply frustrated that she must continue to play roles that are passive and stereotypically conceived by white writers and directors. Even though she knows what’s right—she also knows that she needs to do to keep her job. Her own way of speaking is bald, flat, and direct. When she’s acting, she knows how to deliver the standard formula: a chuckle and extra warmth.

Sheldon Forrester:
late 70. African American. An elderly character actor. Like Wiletta, he has learned from experience how to keep his head down, get along, and say the right thing. Unlike her, there’s no inner fire—he has no wish to break down barriers or fight for justice. His way of getting by is to always be polite and not make waves.
