BREAKDOWN

TOPDOG UNDERDOG

SYNOPSIS: A play about family wounds and healing. Brothers Lincoln (oldest) and Booth (youngest) struggle to find fulfillment and meaning in their adult lives, especially in their work. Lincoln, a former three-card monte shark, now works at an arcade as a whiteface Abraham Lincoln impersonator. Booth is not employed but longs to pick up the three-card monte mantle and pick up where Lincoln left off. Together they ponder different paths to success and discuss their family's past - a past involving both parents leaving the family, but not before giving one brother an inheritance of $500.00. Their sibling.

[ LINCOLN ] 35-50s, Black man. Smart, calculating, drinks heavily. His ex-wife has kicked him out of the house and he now lives with his younger brother, Booth, while he tries to get back on his feet. He works at an arcade as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator, but was formerly a skilled three-card monte shark. He quit the scene when one of his partners was killed, fearing he would be next.

[ BOOTH ]: CAST A black man in his early thirties, Booth is the younger of two brothers and the perpetual underdog. He is intensely jealous of his brother, Lincoln, and views his brother as an obstacle to his vision of success.
