THE WHO'S TOMMY
SYNOPSIS: After witnessing his father shoot his rival, the young Tommy Walker is lost in the universe, endlessly and obsessively staring into the mirror. An innate knack for pinball catapults him from reticent adolescent to celebrity savior.
Content Warning: The Who’s Tommy contains acts of violence, including gun violence and abuse, including sexual abuse. Auditioning actors should feel comfortable with the subject matter when submitting.
TOMMY Male-Presenting; 20s – Early 30s; Open Ethnicity. After witnessing a fatal shooting as a young child, Tommy is left deaf, blind and mute. A genius pinball player – his mastery leads him to become a celebrated hero with a cult-like following. Embittered and apathetic towards his family, yet through his stardom, finds a path to forgiveness. Middle class London dialect. High Tenor (C#3 – B4). THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER.
(2) TOMMY, AGE 4 Male-Presenting; Open Ethnicity. NOTE: Actors of any gender are encouraged to audition.
(2) TOMMY, AGE 10 Male-Presenting; Open Ethnicity. NOTE: Actors of any gender are encouraged to audition.
CAPTAIN WALKER Male-Presenting; Mid 20s – Mid 30s; Open Ethnicity. Tommy’s Father. A war veteran freed from a POW Camp. Very much the head of his household. Hopeful and persistent (and perhaps driven by his guilt) – will go to great lengths to try to cure his child. Middle class London dialect. High Baritone (F3-Ab4, Plus B4 Falsetto). THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER.
MRS. WALKER Female-Presenting; 20s – 30s; Open Ethnicity. Tommy’s Mother. Tired and weary. A loving mother yet frustrated and fatigued trying to care for her son. In, what is possibly, a final act of frustration, she cures and frees him. Middle class London dialect. Pop Mezzo-Soprano, Strong Belter (G3 – D5). THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER.
COUSIN KEVIN Male-Presenting; Early-Mid-20s; Open Ethnicity. Tommy’s older cousin. A bully – stereotypical British “bad guy.” Has no remorse for his bad behavior as a younger child or as he ages. East London dialect. High Baritone/2nd Tenor (C3 – G4). THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER.
UNCLE ERNIE Male-Presenting; 40s – Early 50s; Open Ethnicity. Tommy’s Uncle. A drunk and an eternal bachelor. A man who likes to capitalize on others’ misfortunes and take advantage. East London Dialect. Baritone With Falsetto – Music Hall, Vaudeville. THIS ROLE IS ON OFFER.
