Breakdown
Asian-American actors strongly encouraged to submit.
SEEKING the following role:
XU XIAN
Xu Xian is a modest young man who works in a pharmacy but had dreams of being a scholar and a poet. He should be inherently attractive, an appealing, honest, virtuous, open, earnest guy. However, although he is the romantic leading man of WHITE SNAKE, Xu Xian is also not quite heroic -- he is blind to the fact that he is married to a snake, he is often frightened by things, and the way in which he is constantly tricked by his wife is a huge source of humor in the play. The actor should be inventive and playful and funny as well as being capable of great feeling. The story is a bit of a romantic comedy with a quite surprisingly sad (and then ecstatic) ending. In the scenes with the monk Fa Hai the actor should feel free to get quite irritated, to not feel he has to stay respectful towards the monk. Actors should not fall into the trap of thinking that because this play is based on an ancient tale from a faraway place that they should act all mythic-like. It is a very lively, immediate story with all the range of emotions and familiar behavior of regular life.
