Breakdown

Seeking:

CALEB:
Twenties. White. The only child of the De Leon family. A defected Confederate captain. John’s half brother.

JOHN:
Twenties. Biracial. The son of Mr. De Leon and one of his slaves. A former slave in the De Leon household. Caleb’s half brother.

SIMON:
Fifties. African American. A former slave in the De Leon household. Simon is the elder of the family and has a wife and daughter who also worked in the De Leon household serving the white family.


About the play: On Passover, 1865, the Civil War has just ended and the annual celebration of freedom from bondage is being observed in Jewish homes across the country. One of these homes sits in ruins. As Jewish confederate officer Caleb DeLeon returns from the war, badly wounded, to find his family missing and only two former slaves remaining, Simon and John, the two men are forced to care for him.
