BREAKDOWN

THE WELKIN

SEEKING:

SALLY POPPY, female, 21 years old or thereabouts, possibly pregnant, full of wild imagination and desire that has been fermented into poison by the crushing female dullness of her life. Insubordinate, angry, funny, unforgivably rude but always honest.

ELIZABETH (LIZZY) LUKE, female, 35 years old, give or take, a rural midwife who is slowly watching her power in the community wane. A natural iconoclast but also a pragmatist, kind, funny and formidable.

JUDITH BREWER, female, 50s/60s, singer, a sturdy woman who wears her great status lightly. Can hold court naturally but is in the midst of a gruelling menopause.

CHARLOTTE CARY, female, 50s/60s, singer, a working class woman pretending to be upper class, but very plausibly. Superior when playing her part, broken and desperate when her deceit is revealed.

KITTY GIVENS, female, 20s/30s, Scottish, singer, a stranger who has made a place for herself 400 miles from home by the force of her charm and the tenacity of her friendship.

HELEN LUDLOW, female, 30s/40s, singer, articulate, compassionate, deeply in love with her husband but alienated from her rural community by the accident of her childlessness. Trying always to be graceful and generous in the face of a great private grief.

SARAH HOLLIS, female, 40s/50s, singer, mute as a result of postpartum psychosis triggered by the birth of her youngest child. Despite having no words, she is a silent, beaming sun in the room and very beloved.

EMMA JENKINS, female, 40s/50s, singer, furious at the world and privately anxious about her status within it. If she was alive today, she'd believe everything she heard on Fox news.

ANN LAVENDER, female, 30s, singer, whip smart but sleep deprived, worn down by having a husband who describes himself as feminist but never does the dishes.

MARY MIDDLETON, female, 20s, pregnant, singer, an unusual thinker, deeply rural, the human equivalent of a turnip.

HANNAH RUSTED, female, singer, 20s, a young wife and mother who delights in her friends but is depressed by motherhood and housewifery.

SARAH SMITH, female, 70s/80s, singer, she has 21 children and until recently could stand on her head. Great authority worn lightly. She has seen everything at least twice in her life.

PEG CARTER, female, 20s, working class but rapidly ascending, aspirational, smug but popular despite this. Behaves as if she is the only woman in the world to ever have been pregnant.

MR COOMBES, male (cis or trans), 30s/40s, a kind, vulnerable, emotional man in an impossible economic situation. Good with children and terrified for his future.

FREDERICK POPPY, male, 20s-50s, a solid, God fearing, rural soul trying to do his best with an unhappy young wife. He considers himself a good husband because he beats her less than his neighbor beats his wife.

MR WILLIS, male, 20s - 50s, an educated doctor committed to dispassionate, rational thought who believes himself to be modern. His sympathy and respect for women does not preclude him from patronizing them, but he's doing pretty well for the 18th century.

KATY LUKE, female, 8-11, an old soul.

ALICE WAX, female, 8-11, a privileged little girl who has been shielded from anything ugly in the world.

LADY WAX, female. A mother in grief who is used to being able to buy anything.
