BREAKDOWN
[HOWARD]
Male, 50s – e 60s, any ethnicity. ELLEN’s second husband/stepfather to DANIEL. A psychiatrist. Smart, articulate, warm, loyal.
The following roles have been CAST. Actors may be considered for understudies and possible replacements should they become needed:
[GLADYS GREEN]
– CAST: Elaine May. Female, 70s+. A garrulous and strongly opinionated, aging matriarch whose memory is declining. A former lawyer, turned gallery owner who has owned/operated a small art gallery in Greenwich Village for many years.
[ELLEN]
– CAST: Joan Allen. Female, late 50s – early 60s. GLADY’s daughter. An intelligent and successful psychiatrist struggling with all of the emotions attendant with caring for and deciding how to deal with the care of a declining parent. Not sentimental; pragmatic and forthright, wants to do the right thing by her family.
[DANIEL]
– CAST: Lucas Hedges. Male, mid 20s. ELLEN’s son. A speechwriter. Lives across the hall from his grandmother GLADYS, whom he loves very much. Compassionate and thoughtful; wise beyond his years, with a wry sense of humor. Keeps his personal life and relationships very private, even from his mother and stepfather.
[DON]
– CAST: Michael Cera. Male, late 20s – e 30s. An artist from Massachusetts; has found himself to be the last artist to be shown in GLADYS’ gallery. Unsung and a little unfocused. A true outsider not acclimated with the ways of NYC.
