BREAKDOWN

THE RESERVOIR

SYNOPSIS: Josh's life is a mess. He’s come home to Denver from NYU to get his life together but can’t manage to stay sober. Struggling with fogginess, memory loss, shame, and regret, he finds unlikely allies in his four lovable grandparents. Desperate for camaraderie, Josh resolves to bring his grandparents along with him on the road to recovery. He pressures them into playing memory games. He drags them to Jazzercise class. He forces them to eat spinach by the handful. Eventually, he slams up against the limits of his quest. When he can no longer help his grandparents, they begin to help him.

SEEKING:

JOSH – This principal role has been cast. (He/Him, any ethnicity, early 20s to early 30s) A Queer, Jewish, neurotic lost soul. On medical leave from NYU. Wannabe writer/performer. Moves through life with a manic need to understand. Charming, funny, and hopelessly at sea.

BEV – There is an offer out for this role. (She/Her, any ethnicity, mid-sixties to late seventies) A loving but no-bullshit Jewish scientist. Tough as nails, endlessly curious, relentless, and full of surprises. The moral and spiritual center of the play.

SHRIMPY – (He/Him, any ethnicity, mid-sixties to late seventies) A lovable schmuck of a Jewish grandpa. Filthy, funny, and a total piece of shit. Still, he's impossible not to love.

HANK – (He/Him, White, mid-sixties to late seventies) A judgmental conservative Nebraskan Evangelical. Prickly and stern but with a soft heart under his armor.

IRENE – (She/Her, White, mid-sixties to late seventies) The sweetest Midwestern grandma in the whole wide world. Josh's favorite as a kiddo. Former singer and church pianist. Effortlessly emanates warmth and love.

PATRICIA - (She/Her, any ethnicity, mid-forties to mid-fifties) Josh's Mom. Hurt and angered by Josh’s recent behavior, but at her core, a mom who just wants to be loving and goofy again. Comic chops, vulnerability, and finesse. (Doubles as JEANETTE MCFOLLY, LENNI, AA LADY, and RABBI SILVER)

HUGO – (He/Him, Latin-X, late 30s to early 40s) A long-time bookstore manager. Desperately believes in books and the store. Reserved...until he isn't. Has the ability to transform, comic chops, and finesse. (Doubles as TAYLOR, YAAKOV STERN, COUNSELOR RICK, and SPONSOR)
