The Minutes is a dark comedy and a political satire that blends humor with ominous undertones. It requires actors with sharp, subtle comic skills who can also play menacing and mysterious. Think The Office + The Twilight Zone.
MR. PEEL (Male, White, Late 20s-Late 30s): New member of Big Cherry's city council. Dentist and likeable, young family man. Smart, ethical, idealistic, and personable with a discerning intelligence. Not afraid to ask tough questions. Can be forceful when needed.
MAYOR SUPERBA (Male, 40s-Mid 60s): Mayor of Big Cherry. Strong Leader. Family Man. Firm in his Beliefs. His cordiality can turn intimidating.
MS. JOHNSON (Female, White, Late 20s-Late 30s): City Council Clerk. Officious, shrewd, curt, fastidious, and dedicated public servant with an amiable but mysterious demeanor. Knows more than she reveals. She follows the rules with a stringency that masks her feelings and motives.
MR. BLAKE (Male, Black, Mid 30s-Mid 50s): Council member. Smooth talking, opportunistic politician with fickle tendencies. Aware of being the only POC in the room. His ethical boundaries are hard to determine. Knows how to play the game to get what he wants.
MR. BREEDING (Male, White, 40s-mid 60s): City Council Member. The Mayor's righthand man and a bully. Impatient, loud, cocky, opinionated, lecherous. Takes up space. Because of his aggressiveness, he can be the deciding force when the council makes a decision.
MR. HANRATTY (Male, White, Mid 30s-Mid 50s): City Council member. Bookish, earnest, and seemingly mild-mannered do-gooder, he can turn mean when pushed. Quirky and doesn’t recognize social boundaries. More socially progressive than his colleagues.
MR. ASSALONE (Male, White, 40s-mid 60s): City Council Member. Inside player of smalltown politics and the corrupt brother of the sheriff. Quietly menacing. Only interested in serving himself and his family’s interest. Lives up to his name. No one likes him but they fear his local network of power.
MS. INNES (Female, White, 60+): Second longest running council member. Gracious, privileged, formal, persnickety, and almost grandmotherly. The grand dame of the group, she can be ruthless behind her polite social demeanor.
MS. MATZ (Female, White, Late 30s+): Chairperson of the Council Rules Committee. A klutz and a ditz. Scattered. Eccentric. Befuddled. Skittish (on medication) and not entirely present. An easily persuaded follower.
MR. OLDFIELD (Male, White, 65+): Oldest member of the City Council. Has overstayed his welcome and his relevance. Easily distracted and highly irritable. Uncensored and blunt, he is an old school conservative. Inclined to doze off and mostly concerned about his parking. Expert comic timing.
MR. CARP (Male, White, 50+): City Council Member. Moral, staunch, conscientious and a frequent complainer. Honorable. He is passionately righteous and not afraid to disagree, gripe and criticize.
