SEEKING:
CHOJUN MIYAGI: he/him. 60s. Bari/tenor A2-F4. This character is Japanese. Born in Okinawa. He learned karate from his father, who learned it from his, all the way up the Miyagi line. The living embodiment of the secret karate master. His wife and infant son died in childbirth in a Japanese internment camp. He lives alone and works as a maintenance man in Daniel and Lucille’s building. Not searching for connection but deeply yearning for it.
DANIEL LARUSSO: he/him. 17. Strong pop-tenor up to a Bb4. This character is Italian American. Innocent and charming, he arrives in California close to despair over leaving his life in New Jersey behind. Ready to make friends and fall in love, but quickly disillusioned by the harsh welcome he receives from Johnny Lawrence and his friends. Close to his mother but in search of a more formidable role model.
LUCILLE LARUSSO: she/her. Mid to late 30s. Strong pop belt up to an E5. This character is Italian American. Upbeat and determined to make a new life for her and her son, despite tight financial circumstances. Moves to California in search of opportunity. Loves hearing about the drama of young love. Her husband died after a long illness while she was still pregnant with Daniel. Works hard to be both mom and dad—an impossible task, which Daniel understands. OFFER OUT.
JOHN KREESE: he/him. Mid to late 30s. Strong pop/rock tenor up to a G4. This character can be Black, Indigenous, White, API, Latine, Mixed or MENASA. The karate teacher at Cobra Kai Dojo. A Vietnam War veteran, he preaches military discipline and unfettered rage to his impressionable young students, including Johnny Lawrence, his star pupil. Sees the world in terms of winners and losers. Still grappling with the failure of Vietnam, he will stop at nothing to win back at home. OFFER OUT.
ALI MILLS: she/her. 17. Strong pop-mezz belt up to a D5. This character is South Asian American or Mixed South Asian American. SoCal girl from a wealthy family who feels there must be more to life beyond her sheltered existence. Immediately taken with Daniel, but constantly trailed by her ex-boyfriend, Johnny. Wants to support Daniel but wishes he had more confidence in her, didn’t see her only as a rich kid. Not content to take life as it is, hungry for adventure.
JOHNNY LAWRENCE: he/him. 17. Strong pop/rock tenor up to a Ab4.This character can be Black, Indigenous, White, API, Latine, Mixed or MENASA. Elitist bully whose blood boils at the sight of Daniel. Immediately decides Daniel is a threat when he sees the spark between him and Ali. Bent on beating Daniel into submission. Determined to control Ali, his ex-girlfriend. As privileged as they come, but with none of Ali’s openness or humility. A karate student at John Kreese’s dojo. Strong mover/dancer a plus. OFFER OUT.
FREDDIE FERNANDEZ: he/him. 17. This character is Mexican American. An honor student at Daniel’s high school who lives in the same low-income building as Daniel. Thick skinned and studious with a positive attitude, but no illusions regarding the social hierarchy in San Fernando, where he and Daniel are right at the bottom. Wants to help Daniel fit in, but not willing to stand up to Johnny and his friends. Doubtful that Daniel and Ali are right for each other because of the social divide, but as someone who dreams big, encourages others to shoot for the moon and go for it.
