Note: Each character is based on prominent figures of the art world whose lives intersected briefly at Virginia’s Hampton Institute in the 1940s.
Seeking
VIKTOR LOWENFELD:
Male, Caucasian, mid 30’s. Austrian Jew who is both an important artist and professor. He is extremely intelligent and passionate. He is culturally lost in the American south while grieving personal loses of the Holocaust.
JOHN BIGGERS:
Male ,African American, 18-24. Extremely talented art student who balances his talent with his militancy. He has grown up in small town Carolina and knows no world beyond its prejudice. He is thoughtful but quick to anger.
ELIZABETH CATLETT:
Female, African American, mid 30’s. A talented artist and wise mentor who has moved to Hampton and understands who an African American woman can be outside the boundaries of the South.
