COMEDY OF ERRORS will be set in the 1990s. It’s a dark and oppressive world to start. But as our story continues, there is an effort to celebrate the light and the natural air and bright beautiful colors of the world around us. The show will be underscored by many of our favorite billboard hits from the 1990s. It can almost be thought of as a jukebox musical of sorts, with Shakespeare text overlaid on the songs we know.
EGEON: 50-60. Male-identifying. All ethnicities. A merchant from Syracuse. Mature and frail from travel. He has been searching for his long-lost family for several years and is close to giving up all hope.
ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE: Late 20s/early 30s. Male-identifying. All ethnicities. A traveler in search of his brother and mother. A small fish lost in a big sea. Earthy and free-spirited, yet a quiet and reliable good soul. Looking to be grounded. Guitar/singing a plus. John Cusack/Ethan Hawke energy.
DROMIO OF SYRACUSE: Late 20s/early 30s. Male-identifying. All ethnicities. Antipholus of Syracuse’s sidekick. He’s been by Antipholus of Syracuse’s side since birth. Loyal, fast—both in speed and wit. Puts Antipholus’ needs before his own, both from duty and “brotherly love.” A strong physical comedian and mover.
ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS: Late 20s/early 30s. Male-identifying. All ethnicities. Lost brother and identical twin to Antipholus of Syracuse. A big fish in a small pond. Probably hasn’t had to work too hard or felt much hardship. Self-assured, a bit sly and mischievous, and yet wildly charming. Married to Adriana. Dylan McKay (90210)/Fresh Prince energy.
DROMIO OF EPHESUS: Late 20s/early 30s. Male-identifying. All ethnicities. Antipholus of Ephesus’ sidekick. The lost brother and identical twin to Dromio of Syracuse. He’s been by Antipholus of Ephesus’ side since birth. Loyal, fast—both in speed and wit. Puts Antipholus’ needs before his own, both from duty and “brotherly love.” Lives a less free-floating life than his long-lost twin. A strong physical comedian and mover.
ADRIANA: Late 20s/early 30s. Female-identifying. All ethnicities. Antipholus of Ephesus’ wife. Structured and committed. Type A personality. Jealous—but not without cause. Monica Geller from Friends/Jada Pinkett Smith energy.
LUCIANA: Late 20s. Female-identifying. All ethnicities. Adriana’s sister. Less independent and structured than her sister. A hopeless romantic and dreamer, yet a big rule follower. Blossom/Donna Martin (90210) energy.
LADY ABBESS (Emilia): 50-60. Female-identifying. All ethnicities. Head of a priory in Ephesus.
