THE COLOR PURPLE
Excellent Dancers and Singers. Ensemble will cover some Specialty Roles that include:
Preacher. Male, African-American, ages 40-60. A commanding presence and strong vocal abilities for both speaking and singing
Pa. (Alphonso): Male, African-American, ages 45-60. Celie and Nettie's stepfather. Embodies the darker aspects of the character without becoming a caricature.
Ol’ Mister. Male, African-American, ages 55-70. A farm owner on the land where he was born enslaved.
Buster. (Henry Broadnax). Male African-American. 25-35. A Prize Fighter and friend of the family. Guard. Male African-American. 30-50. Works at the local jail.
Adam. Male African-American. 18-25. Adam is Celie's son raised in Africa by Nettie.
Grady. Male, African-American, ages 30-45. Grady is a suave, charming character who marries Shug Avery later in the story.
Bobby. Male African-American. 18-25. A young handy-man that flirts with Celie.
Ensemble may UNDERSTUDY for the following roles:
Mister—African American, 30s to 40s. Strong, powerful, abusive husband to Celie. In love with Shug. Undergoes major transformation. Powerful voice.
Harpo—African American, 20s. Vulnerable, good hearted son of Mister from his first marriage. Struggles with traditional masculinity, marries Sofia. Strong comedic timing and strong tenor voice.
