[MR. FRANKLIN]
male, 40s-50s, any ethnicity. The supervising teacher at the school for the Deaf who takes on a condescending attitude towards his students and staff. He has an ear to the ground across campus and is especially harsh on James’ teaching practices and budding relationship with his student. Hearing role.
Also seeking the following Understudies:
[JAMES LEEDS U/S/MR. FRANKLIN U/S]
male, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. To cover JAMES LEEDS, a bright, charismatic and articulate teacher at a school for the Deaf. He falls in love with one of his students, trying to navigate their relationship through their communication barrier. Also covers MR. FRANKLIN, the supervising teacher at the school for the Deaf who takes on a condescending attitude towards his students and staff. Hearing role. Must be proficient in American Sign Language.
[SARAH NORMAN U/S/LYDIA U/S]
female, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. To cover SARAH NORMAN, a student at the school for the Deaf who stubbornly refuses to learn to lip read. She signs for the entirety of the play, only speaking at the end. Also covers LYDIA, another spunky student at the school for the Deaf, who is open with her advances towards James. Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing role. Must voice. Must be proficient in American Sign Language.
[ORIN DENNIS U/S]
male, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. To cover ORIN, a student at the school for the Deaf who wants to begin a revolution against the hearing world and fight for the Deaf community’s equal rights. Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing role. Must voice. Must be proficient in American Sign Language.
[MRS. NORMAN U/S/EDNA KLEIN U/S]
female, 40s-50s, any ethnicity. To cover MRS. NORMAN, Sarah’s distant mother who, with James’ nudging, reconciles with her daughter over the course of the play. Also covers EDNA KLEIN, a well-intentioned albeit condescending lawyer helping Orin with his discrimination case against the school for the Deaf. Hearing role.
