BREAKDOWN

THE BURNT PART BOYS

The Burnt Part Boys is a 95-minute haunting, lyrical musical set in a West Virginia coal mining town in the early 1960s. It follows a group of teenagers — some the sons of miners who died in a tragic accident — as they embark on a journey to confront the past and claim their future. With a powerful bluegrass-tinged score and a story rooted in resilience, loss, and coming of age, the show is especially meaningful for our Appalachian audience and community.

This production is part of GVT’s School Matinee Series, where middle and high schools come to the theatre to experience live, professional theatre. Performances will include both daytime school matinees and evening performances for the general public, with an emphasis on educational engagement and artistic excellence.

SEEKING:

Pete - (13-16, Male Identifying) Jake's younger brother. Intense and very imaginative. He is skeptical of the coal mining industry. Curious and adventurous.
Vocal range top: A5

Dusty - (13-16, male identifying) Pete's best friend. A simple-minded teen who is weary of Pete's adventures. Generally amiable, loves to talk. Religious.

Chet - (18-21, male identifying) Jake's best friend and co-worker in the mines. An outgoing guy, but a bit of a wise-ass. Stubborn, loyal.

Dead Miner/Percussion - Seeking a musician who appears as a ghost in the coal mines and serves as the percussionist. This role involves performing with found and unconventional instruments such as washboard, plastic bucket, metal bucket, cymbal, chains, pipes, and similar objects/instruments.
