BREAKDOWN
RICHARD. (Understudy Only)
18+ to play 17. Male. Disabled: cerebral palsy, but does not need a wheelchair. An ambitious overachiever, but a social outcast. He has a buoyant and mischievous wit, but lacks a sense of humor about himself. Constantly scheming his way out of having to feel vulnerable, he craves the power that comes with being senior class president. Equal parts lovable and spiteful. He eventually falls for Anne, the most popular girl in school, and becomes morally wracked over whether her love is enough to assuage his need for social vengeance. A teenage Richard III. Any ethnicity.
BUCK. (Understudy Only)
18+ to play 17. Female. Disabled: Guillain-Barre syndrome, requires a wheelchair. Richard’s best friend. Wryly funny and approachable, she’s the unabashed voice of reason. Buck has a good sense of herself and is content with who she is. Though she’s susceptible to normal teenage shyness, she’s quick with verbal repartee, and unafraid to stand up for herself. She has a monster crush on the school quarterback, and a healthy contempt for Clarissa, the teacher’s pet. Despite her disability, she’s probably the most well adjusted student at Roseland. Any ethnicity.
ANNE.
18+ to play 17. Female. Formerly the most popular girl in school, gossip has her on the precipice of social ruin. She seems to have it all, but then why did Eddie dump her? Still, she’s trying to rise above petty high school drama, and just keep her head down till graduation. She dreams of getting out of suburbia and becoming a professional dancer. Extremely committed and seemingly serious, but once through her tough veneer, she’s empathetic and disarmingly funny. She eventually falls for Richard and enjoys getting to be herself with him. Though she has poise, she carries a secret that weighs on her. A role for an actress possessing great emotional depth, humor, and tremendous heart. Dance is required for this role, dance experience is a plus. Any ethnicity.
ELIZABETH.
Late 30s/40s. Female. Roseland High School’s English teacher and student government advisor. Fancying herself a hip teacher, she uses her goofy humor to relate to the kids, though it’s unclear whether it works any better than her sporadic attempts at discipline. She’s genuinely committed to her students and passionate about helping them reach their full potential. She looks for the best in people, but her good intentions can leave her vulnerable to manipulation. Frustrated with athletics being so highly prioritized over other activities, and with the athletes getting so much extra leeway, she can’t help but be biased toward students like Richard and Buck. Any ethnicity.
CLARISSA.
18+ to play 17. Female. Junior class vice president. Ceaselessly plucky, Clarissa would be a model student were it not for her constant, unabashed evangelical activism. A stickler for the letter of the law. A perfectionist and high achiever. Committed to her religious ideals, she is driven by the belief that doing the right thing is more important than anything else, except maybe getting into Harvard. Think Tracy Flick from Election with missionary zeal. A role for a gifted comedic actress. Any ethnicity.
EDDIE.
18+ to play 17. Male. Star quarterback and beloved junior class president. His constant heckling also makes him Richard’s arch nemesis. The model of heteronormative, masculine privilege. His looks and athletic prowess prove brawn is better than brains. He doesn’t take much seriously at school—except when it comes to maintaining his social status, which ensures that he has the support of the student body at his disposal. Popular and charismatic, his bullying treads the line between playful and threatening. This is a role for an actor with strong verbal and physical comedic skill. Any ethnicity.
