Breakdown
NOTE: Four women make up the synth-pop (i.e.nerd punk) band the Shrews and play all of the characters in this adaptation (save Katherina, who is played by a male). Amongst the four, there should be a violin or viola player, a keyboardist, a guitarist, and a bass player. Special consideration for actors able to play multiple instruments. All should be able to sing in a rock or punk style and of a type appropriate for a punk band. Diversity is encouraged in all roles. The entire greek chorus styled ensemble plays and sings each song, although occasional solos apply directly to character situations. The music style is somewhere between Chvrches and Depeche Mode. While there is no traditional dance, contemporary movement work creates images to accompany much of the music.
SEEKING
Actor 1 - Petrucio, Bianca, Lead Singer – Female, any ethnicity, 20s-30s. An edgy, punk performer - somewhere between Amanda Palmer and Janeane Garofalo.A personality charismatic enough to front a band, and also play a Shakespearean lead. Should be able to sing in a rock or punk style and of a type appropriate for a punk band. Special consideration for actors able to play multiple instruments. Preferably over 5’8, but negotiable.
Actor 2 - Katherina – Male, any ethnicity, 20s- 30s. A traditionally “hot” male, who looks like he frequents the Gym. Able to sing in rock falsetto. Must be comfortable playing a woman in a non-camp style. Should be able to sing in a rock or punk style and of a type appropriate for a punk band. Special consideration for actors able to play multiple instruments.
Actor 3 - Hortensio– Female, any ethnicity, 20s- 30s. Functions as leading musician in the band. Plays guitar, violin, or keyboard and fills in on occasion drum pads. Hortensio, himself, is eager to find his match, and endearingly pitiful when he doesn’t. The energy of Amy Poehler, but open to actual type. Should be able to sing in a rock or punk style and of a type appropriate for a punk band. Special consideration for actors able to play multiple instruments.
Actor 4 - Baptista, Lucentio– Female, any ethnicity, 20s- 30s. Plays guitar or bass. The energy of Lily Tomlin, but open to actual type. Baptista is the bumbling old man trying to find the best match for his daughters, while Lucentio is the stereotypical emo boy in love. Should be able to sing in a rock or punk style and of a type appropriate for a punk band. Special consideration for actors able to play multiple instruments.
Actor 5 - Gremio, Tranio- Female, any ethnicity, 20s- 30s. Virtually a female Jim Carrey. Big on clown, and able to play broad roles with great specificity. Gremio is an impotent, yet rich, old man, and Tranio is Lucentio’s exuberant, eager-to-please servant. This role is the most physically comedic of the show. Plays keyboard or violin. Should be able to sing in a rock or punk style and of a type appropriate for a punk band.Special consideration for actors able to play multiple instruments.
