TACOS LA BROOKLYN
Tacos La Brooklyn follows Chino, a young and ambitious Korean American who grew up in a foster family on Los Angeles’ Eastside, as he hopes to grow his successful taco stand, “Chino’s Underground Tacos,” into a brick-and-mortar restaurant. When Yesenia Tapia, a Mexican American social media influencer, accuses Chino of cultural appropriation and pandering to a gentrifying neighborhood, he must convince the community of his cultural authenticity in a multi-faceted and complicated city. A multilingual drama, Tacos La Brooklyn asks captivating questions about cultural appreciation vs. cultural appropriation in contemporary multi-ethnic Los Angeles.
CHINO (male, late 20s/early 30s) – A young Korean American with a pronounced East LA accent and hardened by foster life, who grows up to run Chino’s Underground Tacos. Chino learned to make barbacoa from his adopted abuelo, Don Agapito.
EL MUSICO (male, 42) – A blue collar worker by day and musician by night, he is a hopeless romantic and classic pregonero, who serenades the market with nostalgic boleros and rancheras.
BENJIRO (male, 38) – A Japanese classic veterano and owner of Whittier Blvd. Social Club in Japan. He’s one of the old school lowrider mechanics and OG Chicano aficionado.
WHISPER (male, 32) – A Japanese chola whose life changed by building lowriders.
MARIKO A.K.A. LITTLE TRISTE (female, 29) – A Japanese rapper who follows chola fashion. She’s very femme, but still gangster.
UNDERSTUDIES:
YESENIA TAPIA (female, late 20s/early 30s) – A Southern California social media influencer highly critical of cultural appropriation and gentrification. Yesenia comments on all things Chicano and has a strong local following.
DON AGAPITO (male, 66) – Owner of Tacos la Brooklyn and adoptive “abuelo” of Chino. He is a sturdy and non-emotive señor, callused by an unforgiving life in the “rancho.” He dreams of opening a brick and mortar restaurant in the Eastside someday. Speaks fluent Spanish.
