Equity actors for Steppenwolf Theatre Company's 2024-25 Season (see breakdown).

Steppenwolf Theatre Company is committed to creating an organization that deeply values and draws strength from the various stories and storytellers that make up our society. The majority of characters we currently encounter adhere to the gender binary, using he/him or she/her pronouns. Despite these limitations in
descriptions, our casting aims to be as inclusive as possible. We welcome submissions from gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors for roles that resonate with their identities.

All roles will be understudied.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a 60-90 second contemporary monologue. If you are auditioning for Leroy and Lucy, please bring your guitar and play 32 bars in the style of the blues. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

Dotty Otley/Mrs. Clackett Female-identifying, any ethnicity, 50s-60s, British. theater actress, who has been playing old women for the majority of her career. Forgetful, often struggling to remember blocking, props, and lines. Cares deeply for her castmates but can be spiteful when spurned. Currently engaged in an affair with her much younger castmate, Garry. In Nothing On, she plays Mrs. Clackett, the Brent’s Cockney housekeeper. Mrs. Clackett is earnest and hospitable, although a little slow in fulfilling her duties. Strong physical comedy and language skills.

Brooke Ashton/Vicki Female-identifying, any ethnicity, 18-25. Young, idealistic; inexperienced. Describes herself as “probably best known as the girl wearing nothing but ‘good, honest, natural froth’ in the Hauptbahnhofbrau lager commercial.” Not a great actress. Spacey. A bit ditzy. Forgetful, often losing things. Cannot see without her contacts. Currently sleeping with Lloyd Dallas, the director. In Nothing On, Brooke plays Vicki, an Englishwoman, who secretly works for the tax authority, and is trying to woo Roger.

Belinda Blair/Flavia Brent Female-identifying, any ethnicity, 30-40s. British; a talented, veteran actress; charming, reliable, positive. Consistently trying to keep the production going. Knows all the gossip. Busybody. In Nothing On, Belinda plays Flavia, an Englishwoman, who secretly tries to use the play’s house with her husband. Dependable, though not crazy about household duties.

Poppy Norton-Taylor (CAST) Female-identifying, any ethnicity, 20s British; the assistant stage manager; earnest. Hard-working. Invested in the production. Overworked to the point of exhaustion. Can be emotional. Secretly having an affair with Lloyd Dallas, the director. Understudying Brooke and filling in wherever she needs to. Strong physical comedy and language skills.

Lloyd Dallas (CAST) Male-identifying, any ethnicity, 40s-50s. The director of the play. Passionate. Sarcastic. Can be snooty and doesn’t seem to care much for Nothing On. Has a temper that he works to keep in check during rehearsals. Suave, Smooth, Charming. He’s secretly sleeping with both Brooke and Poppy.

Garry Lejeune/Roger Tramplemain (CAST) Male, any ethnicity, 30s-40s. Professional and easily fired up. Tries to keep the show going. Acts as if he is the show’s lead. Prone to jealousy. Vague. Rarely finishes his sentences. Currently engaged in an affair with his much older castmate, Dotty. In Nothing On, he plays Roger Tramplemain, an English real estate agent who is attempting to rent the house to a Sheikh as well as use it as a place to secretly cavort with Vicki.

Frederick Fellowes/Philip Brent/Sheikh Male-identifying, Person of Color, 40s-50s. sweet, neurotic, bumbling. Sometimes oblivious. Always has a question about blocking, lines, props, and his character’s motivation. Disdains violence and faints at the sight of blood. Often gets nosebleeds. Often doubts himself. His wife left him during the rehearsal process. In Nothing On, he plays both Philip Brent and the Shiekh. Philip Brent is English and owns the house that the play takes place in but is living in Spain to avoid taxes. The Sheikh is a wealthy man who is interested in renting the house.

Selsdon Mowbray/Burglar (CAST) Male-identifying, any ethnicity, 60s-70s. an aging, veteran actor; forgetful. Often falls asleep. Alcoholic. Has a reputation for drinking on the job. Selectively listens and pretends to not hear what others are saying. In Nothing On, he plays the Burglar, who is Cockney, and breaks into the Brent household.

Tim Allgood Male-identifying, any ethnicity, 30s, the production’s stage and company manager. Exhausted. Over worked. Sleep-deprived. Understudies Selsdon and Frederick. Earnest. Frantic. Nervous.

LEROY AND LUCY

Lucy Black, female-presenting. Ageless but appears to us in a young lithe body (20s-mid 30s). Rooted in her African-ness. Clever, transfixing, playful, and unpredictable. A chameleon. She’s also the devil. Plays guitar throughout the play. A singing voice that takes you to another place, does not need to be a trained singer but has musical inclinations.

Robert (CAST) Black, Male-presenting, 25-35 years old, Young and Curious. From the South. Soon to be the blues God. Strong Guitar player. Also plays Harmonica.

FOOL FOR LOVE

Eddie Male-identifying, 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity. A proud cowboy, who is rarely off his horse; there's a particular broken-down quality about his body, as if he's aged long before his time; a Marlboro Man type; trapped by a self-defining adolescent myth, he has taken to liquor; his passion and competitive nature tend to get him into trouble.

May Female-identifying, 20s-early 30s, any ethnicity. Eddie's former lover; an enigmatic Everywoman type; simultaneously strong-willed and vulnerable; she can keep up with Eddie's verbal gymnastics and power plays; she craves stability, affection, self-empowerment, and independence; she is torn between the fantasy and memory of their love and the reality and pain of their past.

Old Man Male-identifying, 60s, any ethnicity. Scraggly and weathered appearance; the surreal and humorous father of both Eddie and May; a contrarian; a selfish and naïve man, whose bad habits have rubbed off on his children; in the past, figments of his imagination have allowed him to convince himself that he could balance two lives without consequences.

Martin Male-identifying, 20s-30s, any ethnicity. A simple, innocent, and kind man who lives in a town near May's hotel. A solidly built maintenance worker; diametrically opposite to Eddie, he feels like a lost traveler swept up briefly in their storm; he represents the hopeful but dull future ahead for May if she chooses to let go of Eddie for good.

1 (CAST) illness and struggles to share this secret with the people closest to him; to help break the news to his loved ones, he enlists the help of a stranger; he is stuck but not at all a passenger in his own life; he can be present even in stillness.

2 (CAST) 60 to 80 years old, White, female-identifying. 2 is the person who responds to the ad posted by 1; she helps him break the news of his illness to his loved ones and later helps him deal with his failing health; a wannabe actor trying to earn money for her acting classes; eccentric but no schtick; New York sensibility but also carries sadness, empathy, and sorrow; has natural comedic chops.

3 30 to mid 40s, Black, female-identifying; we first meet 3 as 1s sister; after learning about her brother's illness, she steps in to find someone to help manage his health; has comedic chops and may double as multiple roles.

4 30 to mid 40s, White, male-identifying; 4 ultimately plays 1's ex who was once sick but has since recovered; has comedic chops. NOTE: may double as multiple roles.

5 20 to 30 years old, Latine, Asian, or Middle Eastern/North African, male-identifying; 5 is the narrator of the play; he isn't seen until he is; has a beautiful and energetic voice.
