BREAKDOWN

Skylight Music Theatre 2024-25 Season

WAITRESS

MUSIC/LYRICS: Sara Bareilles

BOOK: Jessie Nelson

DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER: Lisa Shriver

MUSIC DIRECTOR: Janna Ernst

FIRST REHEARSAL: 9/10/24

OPENING: 10/4/24

CLOSING: 10/27/24

SEEKING:

JENNA: Female, 20s-30s. A woman stuck in her life as an unhappily married waitress in a small town. Finds some happiness and expression through her meticulous baking of pies and her friendships with her coworkers, Dawn and Becky. Lives her life paycheck-to-paycheck, day by day, and wants nothing more than to get away and start fresh, unbeknownst to her destructive husband, Earl. Mezzo-soprano F#3 - F5.

DAWN: Female, 20s. Waitress and friend of Jenna. Eccentric, meticulous, and slightly unusual. She sets the tables, painstakingly ensuring each salt and peppershaker is equidistant from the napkin holder. She finds her perfect love match in Ogie, resisting, at first, but then giving in to a harmonic convergence of oddly-matched souls. Mezzo-soprano G3 - Eb5.

BECKY: Female, 30s-50s. Waitress and friend of Jenna. Irreverent, been there, made it back, and somehow kept her forward and often wicked sense of humor. Her love for Jenna and Dawn is palpable. Her heart is as big and bold as can be. Mezzo-soprano Eb3 - Eb5.

DR. POMATTER: Male, 30s-40s. Endearing and charmingly neurotic. Has a warm, if clumsy, manner. Jenna’s gynecologist with whom an unexpected extramarital affair is born. Has a quirky sense of humor, a big heart, and a repressed love of pies. Tenor C3 - Bb4.

EARL: Male, 20s-30s. Jenna’s husband. Peaked in high school with a face that is clouded with broken dreams, drowned with cheap beer. Just enough narcissism mixed with stupidity, to be a potent Molotov cocktail that can explode into unexpected anger one second and then turn into a sobbing mess the next. Bari/Tenor Eb3 - G4.

OGIE: Male, 20-30s. Wonderfully quirky and oddly lovable. Becomes slightly obsessed with Dawn (in a hilarious and endearing way) after she goes on a 5-minute date with him. Filled with joy, incredibly persistent, and delightfully odd. Tenor C3 - Bb4.

CAL: (Already Cast) Male, 40s. A chef at the diner. A “Salt of the Earth” guy. Brash, impatient, unsentimental, but somehow charming. B2 - G4.

JOE: Male, 60s-early 70s. The owner of the diner where Jenna, Dawn, Becky, and Cal work. Under an extremely curmudgeonly exterior, he has a soft spot for Jenna (and her pie), and at his core is a heart of gold. A sarcastically funny and no-nonsense guy with a keen ability to read people. Baritenor B2 - G#4.

LULU: Young Girl, 4-5 years old. Daughter of Jenna and Earl. A sweet, carefree child.

FAGIN: 60s. A conniving career criminal and conman. He takes in homeless children and teaches them to pick pockets for him. Baritone or Tenor B3/Fb5.

NANCY: 20s. A graduate of Fagin's “school of thieves” and tragically involved in an abusive relationship with the older Bill Sikes. She is a career thief, hardened and streetwise beyond her years, but also intelligent, caring and good-hearted. She longs for a better life. A wonderfully warm mother figure to all in Fagin's gang. Alto E3/B4.

BILL SIKES: 35. Perhaps the most infamous graduate from Fagin's gang. Nancy's brutal and abusive boyfriend. Always threatening, angry, and bitter. Bass C#3/C4.

BET / AS CAST: 20s. One of Fagin's former pickpockets. Nancy's sidekick. Bet looks up to Nancy and is caring and good-natured. Soprano C4/C5.

MR. BUMBLE / AS CAST: 50s. The domineering Beadle (a minor official who carries out various civil, educational or ceremonial duties) who runs the workhouse. Pompous and self-absorbed, greedy and uncaring. He preaches Christian morality but behaves without compassion towards the paupers in his care. Baritone C3/A4.

WIDOW CORNEY / AS CAST: 50s. The sharp-tongued, domineering matron of the workhouse. A widow, who will do anything to get Mr. Bumble’s attention. Soprano C4/E5.

MRS. SOWERBERRY / AS CAST: 40s. The Undertaker's wife. She rules the roost and is stingy and mean-spirited. Along with her husband, she provides some comic relief. Alto or Soprano Bb4/F5.

NOAH CLAYPOLE / AS CAST: 18+ to play late teens. The Sowerberrys' apprentice, he bullies Oliver about his mother and enjoys a flirty relationship with Charlotte. A downright bully.

MR. BROWNLOW / AS CAST: 50s. A distinguished older gentleman of wealth and breeding. Open hearted, generous, and truly cares for Oliver.

DR. GRIMWIG / AS CAST: 40s. A silly doctor who thinks he knows more than he actually does. OLD SALLY / AS CAST: 70s. A pauper with an important secret.

YOUTH ENSEMBLE: Already Cast. 6-14. Any gender. Fagin’s gang, workhouse boys, street vendors, and others. Looking for a wide range of personalities and types. Strong voice and dancing a plus.

Based on the novel by: Mary Shelley

DIRECTOR: Michael Unger

MUSIC DIRECTOR: Janna Ernst

CHOREOGRAPHER: Jayne Pink

FIRST REHEARSAL: 1/28/25

OPENING: 2/21/25

CLOSING: 3/9/25

SEEKING:

VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN, 30s - a brilliant, young scientist who is toying with the advancement of technology and the potential horrors of the same. He sacrifices all that is dear to him to satisfy his hunger to reanimate the dead. He comes to learn the errors of obsessive ambitions, but too late. Tenor - C3-A4.

ROBERT WALTON/BLIND MAN/PROFESSOR/MAGISTRATE/MINISTER, 40s-50s - male identifying character with great range and facility with language. Doubles as several roles in this intense chamber musical. As Walton, is the narrator of the piece – embroiled in his own obsession with nature as opposed to Victor’s obsession with science. As Blind Man, a poor cottager who shows The Creature its first kindness. Baritone - B2-E4.

THE CREATURE, 30s-40s - the imposing subject of Victor’s grand experiment. His massive strength is balanced by a naiveté and longing to be loved. He becomes obsessed with revenge against Victor. This is not a ghoul-type of creature of many of our film memories. He is remarkably intelligent, articulate and, at first, generous. A giant, confused, cobbled together new being who literally goes to the ends of the earth to seek answers from his creator/father figure, Dr. Frankenstein. Baritone - G2- Ab4.

ELIZABETH LAVENZA/PROFESSOR/As Cast, 20s-early-30s - Victor’s fiancé, adopted by Victor’s family after she was orphaned as a child and became Victor’s closest companion. She grew up in a world of privilege and is dedicated to her found family and to the love of her life, even as he spirals out of control. Soprano - A3-F5.

HENRY CLERVAL/PROFESSOR/As Cast, Victor’s lifelong friend. He recognizes Victor’s obsession with this dangerous new “technology” and fights to bring Victor back to common sense. Tenor - D3- Bb4.

VICTOR’S FATHER/PROFESSOR/EXECUTIONER/As Cast, A man of privilege and great generosity, he has adopted both Elizabeth and Justine to give them better lives. Dies of a broken heart as a result of the unwitting effects of his son’s grand experiment. Wants only what is best for his children (adopted and otherwise) and is dedicated to his late wife’s dying wish, that Victor and Elizabeth get married. Baritone - A2-F#4.

VICTOR’S MOTHER/AGATHA/PROFESSOR/As Cast, As Mother, dedicated to the success of her children – by birth and adopted. She dies of scarlet fever early on in the story and appears in memory to Victor. As Agatha, a poor cottager dedicated to her blind father’s comfort. Anonymously receives great generosity from The Creature, before becoming horrified at his appearance. Mezzo Soprano - B3-E5.

WILLIAM/As Cast, Victor’s 10-year-old brother who is completely dedicated to Victor. He has great love for his family and is one of the first to die at the hand of The Creature. C4-D5.

JUSTINE/PROFESSOR/NURSE/As Cast, William’s nanny – dedicated to her adoptive family and especially to her charge, William. After being falsely convicted of William’s murder (at the hands of The Creature), she is executed – but later re-animated by Victor as a companion for The Creature. Victor sees the danger in his actions and destroys her as The Creature observes, which leads to nearly everyone’s ultimate downfall. Mezzo - Bb3-C5

Vocal range top: B4, Vocal range bottom: Ab2
