IDA, 16, Black. Talented dancer, singer, and actor. A young woman who shows enormous promise as a dancer and is determined to dance with the group Whitey's Lindy Hoppers at the Savoy Ballroom. A spirited, energetic young girl. Skill in jump rope/double dutch a plus.

ROSE, 18-23, Black. Dancer/actor/singer. Ida's sister. A nursing student. Doubles as MAY, 18-23, a dancer at the Savoy Ballroom. Skill in jump rope/double dutch a plus.

MAMA, 40s - 50s, Black. Excellent singer and actor. Working as a housekeeper to support her daughters. Believes strongly that they should work hard at school. Doubles as ETHEL WATERS - the famous singer.
