Breakdown
David Rabe's Tony-winning Sticks and Bones is a savage and savagely comic portrait of an American family pulled apart by their son's return from the Vietnam War. Ozzie and his wife Harriet are overjoyed to see their eldest son David again, but the furies that haunt David begin to overwhelm the family. This production reunites playwright David Rabe and director Scott Elliott, for the first time since Hurlyburly (2005).
OZZIE [CAST] (50s) - A mild-mannered family man, the ''man of the house,'' with a steady job and a narrow sense of how things should be done. His latent anger emerges and frustration at his lot emerges under the pressure of his son's despair, which he struggles to understand.
HARRIET [CAST] (50s) - A proud housewife, who works nervously to sustain the equilibrium in the family. She dotes on her husband and sons. But she too has a crisis brought on by David's blindness, though she tries to get closer to him and to fix it.
DAVID (20-30) - Ozzie and Harriet's son who returns from Vietnam blinded. Once an obedient and loving son, he is now tortured by his war experiences, and finds he increasingly wants to share his torture with his parents. Deeply troubled, confused by his blindness and the attempt to return to ''normal.'' At the same time, somehow powerful in his newfound knowledge of the world and its harsher realities.
FATHER DONALD (55-80) - The family priest, who acts as a counselor to the family. Confident, good-humored, dominant and aggressive, with no patience for doubt or dissent.
RICKY (plays 16-18) - A happy fella, uninterested in others' suffering, and skilled at avoiding and even disarming it. Sincerely prefers his mom's fudge, playing guitar, and girls to just about anything.
ZUNG (20-30) - A Vietnamese woman who had a relationship with David in Vietnam, and who is now haunting him. Should be able to speak or learn some lines of Vietnamese. This character is in development, so changes and expansion are possible. Also possible nudity.
SERGEANT MAJOR (25-45) - An African-American man. Military bearing, highly trained. Overwhelmed with his work of bringing wounded soldiers home. Leads by intimidation when necessary.
