BREAKDOWN
The party seeks a presidential candidate with popular appeal who comes from outside the Beltway, and it lights on Grant Matthews--hard driving businessman and a rising national star. He and his wife will have to pretend to be still living together, and he will have to deliver the speeches they write for him, but it looks like he's a shoe-in. But as they try to train him to be a politician, he tries to show them some moral clarity. And Mrs. Matthews has some wisdom for them all. A hopeful comedy from 1945 that has even more to say to us now.
SEEKING
Grant Matthews, Mid-40’s-early 50’s: A captain of industry, charismatic, forthright and honest, who has succeeded in business by making fair deals and is now being urged to become the party candidate for President of the United States. He has an All-American faith in the intelligence and goodness of the electorate and the importance of speaking his mind, none of which makes him perfectly suited to his handlers’ plans.
Spike McManus, 30’s-40’s: Top political reporter. Genial and charming, but a player as cynical as anyone covering politics must grow to be.
James Conover, 60’s: Party bigwig. Quiet, steady, political realist with impeccable taste and instincts. Enjoys the game, his status and the power he wields. Fond of the prospective candidate, but not attached to him.
Sam Parrish, 50’s – 60’s: Detroit businessman and major party donor. Old family friend of the candidate’s and his equal, but lacking his compassion and integrity.
Mary Matthews, Mid-30’s-50: Wife of the candidate. Has made her peace with her husband’s indifference, but discovers she may just love her him when he finds his moral compass. Independent, honest, and out of her depth among the politicians but handily effective at putting them in their places.
Kay Thorndyke, Mid-30’s-50: Newspaper publisher with significant power in the party, and a great deal of influence with the prospective candidate, as they are having an affair. Sharp, bright, witty and calculating, all of which comprise her considerable charm.
Lulubelle Alexander, 30’s – 50’s: Wife of a Georgian district court judge who, lacking other influence and opportunity is perfectly happy to drink away the evening at her husband’s expense. An indulgently comic role.
