BREAKDOWN

SOMETHING ROTTEN

SEEKING:

NICK BOTTOM: 30 to 40 years old, any ethnicity and ability, male presenting. Strong, articulate Baritenor, A2-G4. An aspiring playwright, actor, and director and the older brother of Nigel Bottom. Ambitious, passionate, and a go-getter with big dreams, Nick is struggling to keep his theater troupe alive and is starting to lose hope. Nick loves his wife, Beatrice, and wants to build a family with her, but sometimes loses sight in the bigger picture when his desire for fame gets in the way. Incredibly jealous of William Shakespeare’s success and adoring fans, Nick will go to any lengths to beat him and be perceived as more successful and intelligent by his peers. He participates in a brief tap-dancing battle and is able to hold his own in group dance numbers.

NIGEL BOTTOM: 20 to 35 years old, any ethnicity and ability, male presenting. Sweet Tenor with easy upper register, Eb3-A4. A sweet, sensitive, and slightly awkward aspiring playwright and poet. Nigel’s got talent: his work is thoughtful, romantic, and genuinely good (in fact, Shakespeare seems to have stolen some of his best lines). Nigel is obsessed with Shakespeare’s work and admires the man intensely. He is eager to produce his own exceptional work. Nigel and his brother, Nick, run a troupe of actors, who perform Nigel’s plays. Nigel is a little too involved in his world of imagination and poetry, and thus depends on Nick and Bea’s more pragmatic sensibilities to guide him. When he meets and falls in love with a young woman named Portia, however, Nigel begins to come into his own and develop a stronger spine. Nigel and Portia bond over a shared love of poetry, and as their relationship blossoms, Nigel himself does, too.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: 28 to 40 years old, any ethnicity and ability male presenting. Rock-tenor god, smooth leading man, Ab2-Ab4. The sexy, unrivaled rockstar of the Renaissance. Shakespeare carries himself like he knows he’s a heartthrob and relishes the attention that is lavished on him. With his cool charisma and sensual style, he ensures that he is always followed by an entourage of adoring fans. Although Shakespeare is most certainly a genius (and knows it), he is also desperate to maintain this superstar status. He has no shame going to great lengths to steal ideas from others and keep an eye on the competition. Has moderate to strong dancing skills, including tap, and participates in a tap dance battle with Nick Bottom.

BEA: Lates twenties - 40 years old, any ethnicity and ability, female presenting. Mezzo with solid mix and belt, D3-D5 Nick’s wife. Supportive and fiercely loyal, Bea champions Nick in everything he does, yet isn’t afraid to challenge his stubborn beliefs when she thinks they are holding him back. Determined to be seen as more than just a wife and fighting against the gender norms of the time, she channels her confidence, determination, and spunky attitude into every bold endeavor she takes on.

PORTIA: 20 to 35 years old, any ethnicity and ability, female presenting. Mezzo ingenue with clear legit tone and solid mix, G3-F#5. A beautiful, wholesome Puritan girl with a pure heart. Although her father, Brother Jeremiah, does his best to keep her away from the sinful influences of art and poetry, Portia is just rebellious enough to seek them out. She loves poetry, more than anything else in the world – that is, until she meets poet and playwright Nigel Bottom. When she runs into Nigel on the street, she quickly falls for him. They find common ground in their mutual obsession with beautiful verse. Portia is quirky, unwittingly funny, and has a hopeful optimism about life — but also possesses a courageous side that makes her utterly irresistible.

BROTHER JEREMIAH: 40s to 60, any ethnicity and ability, male presenting. Stern Baritone with a funky side. For audition, sing 16 Bars of comedic song. A militant Puritan, and the father of Portia. Brother Jeremiah is incredibly protective of his daughter, locking her up at night so that she can’t get into trouble. Brother Jeremiah believes strongly that theatre and poetry are the work of the Devil and is opposed to any expression of the arts (even though his daughter is a secret lover of verse). He’s bitter, unyielding, and staunchly conservative, but also possesses a strange knack for turning almost any statement into unwitting sexual innuendo. Possesses an excellent singing voice. Dancing abilities are a plus.

NOSTRADAMUS: Late 40s to 60s, any ethnicity and ability, any gender. Baritenor, Alto in tenor range, or strong Soprano belter to sing 8va, who can emulate a variety of MT personalities and genres. A soothsayer who almost sees the future correctly... emphasis on the word almost. A bit loony, quite eccentric, and an unpredictable wild card of a personality. Always striving to be helpful and lead with good intentions, Nostradamus is enthusiastic about their visions despite the nonsensical nature of the muddied foresight. Sings and moves very well (some tap).
