SIGNS OF LIFE
OLDER CHRIS - Male – 30-35 years old. The present-day version of YOUNG CHRIS. Sure of many things about himself: Astrologer. Song writer, Gay, Vegan. But equally unsure about many things: Abusive childhood. Single. Confused as to why he hasn’t yet healed the childhood abuse after years of working on it. Prone to dissociating in troubling times. Vocal range Ab2 - B4.
YOUNG CHRIS - Male – 15 years old. The teenage version of OLDER CHRIS. He is a sensitive boy who is trying to escape becoming a product of his abusive father and narcissistic mother. At his core he is loving, but has moments of rage, unkind outbursts, and instant remorse for having had them. He can’t understand why he was born into this family; the SIGNS help him understand. Vocal range C3 - A4.
DORIS - Female - 50-60 years old. Both YOUNG CHRIS and OLDER CHRIS’ Mother. Powerful presence. Opinionated, a gossip, smoker, drinker. Her redeeming quality is she likes to have fun, but only if it involves her. She is ultimately neglectful towards YOUNG CHRIS by not stopping the abuse from his father. For all her put-on outward strength, she is ultimately weak and co-dependent at her core.
PETER, ET. AL - Male – 20 years old. YOUNG CHRIS’ older brother. Feminine, catty and mean. Has occasional civil moments with YOUNG CHRIS but is mostly an antagonist. Jealous of YOUNG CHRIS. His anger is so absurd it makes him naturally funny without trying to be. Doubles as:
KIRBY JENSEN - The TV INFOMERCIAL host. Quirky, washed-up sci-fi actor who has been reduced to hosting late nite infomercials.
ANDREW - Childhood friend to YOUNG CHRIS. No spoken lines, sings a solo in the Jazz Choir. BEN - OLDER CHRIS’ ex-lover. Dark, sensual, abusive. Vocal range. A2 - E4.
ARIES - A spunky, quick talking sign who is semi-antagonistic, but means well. She helps kick-start YOUNG CHRIS’ healing journey, and keeps OLDER CHRIS in check with brutal honesty when he wanders from his path. A power belt. All action begins with Aries. Vocal range A3 - E5 (strong belt at E5).
TAURUS- A grounded, earthy Diva, a la Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Ariana DeBose. She shows up to center and ground YOUNG CHRIS during a troubled time, and helps OLDER CHRIS by reminding him of how strong he used to be as a child in the midst of chaos. Vocal range A3 - E5.
GEMINI - A fun-loving trickster, with elements of a stand-up comedian. She helps YOUNG CHRIS to communicate, and uses laughter as a vital tool. She helps bring OLDER CHRIS back to his inner comedian. Goofy, and firm, there are two of her, you know. Vocal range Ab3 - Eb5.
CANCER / NURSE - A motherly, caring, and supportive sign. She teaches YOUNG CHRIS that all emotions are important, even the negative ones. She assumes the role of the IDEAL MOTHER in act 2, and shows OLDER CHRIS what the perfect mother would have looked like. Doubles as NURSE – Kind and compassionate, and on top of her job. Any ethnicity. Vocal range Bb3 - D5.
LEO / SUSAN - A proud, vibrant sign, who loves being center stage. An air of classic Hollywood Diva about her, she teaches YOUNG CHRIS how to step into his own spotlight, and she reminds OLDER CHRIS how important believing in yourself is to your personal growth. Doubles as SUSAN – 30-40. Chris’ childhood music teacher, and first mentor. Teaches him a hard lesson in tough love. Vocal range F#3 - B5 (legit to B5 with strong mix-belt in lower range).
VIRGO / SOPHIA - A no-nonsense, straight talking sign. She’s sarcastic at times, but simplistic in her language. She teaches YOUNG CHRIS to regulate his overactive mind, and how to choose the right thing to say when expressing how he feels. She reminds OLDER CHRIS that he is stuck in a pattern of picking abusive men, like BEN. Doubles as SOPHIA – 30-50. A Long Island friend of the family. Struggles to keep up with the chaotic family. Vocal range G3 - D5.
LIBRA / DARLA - A dancer, and a people pleaser who struggles with making up her own mind. She sees both sides to every story. She has a good heart. She helps OLDER CHRIS get what he wants by tipping the scales in favor of BEN, a man who is not right for him. She explains in act 2 the new rules of the world he’s entered, and launches him on a quest to reclaim his lost and wounded Inner Child. Doubles as DARLA – Female – 30 years old. YOUNG CHRIS’ older sister. She is the most outwardly loving family member, with not as much attitude as the other siblings, but not a pushover either. She can give it back to Josephine when provoked. Loves Chris like a mother. Protects him most of all the siblings. She is not without her idiosyncrasies or moments of anger.
SCORPIO - A sensual, jazzy, and ethereal sign. She represents sexual connection and romance. She is the essence behind the attraction OLDER CHRIS feels towards BEN, and she leads OLDER CHRIS to an understanding of the darker side of HIS mind. Vocal range Eb3 - Db5.
SAGITTARIUS / ADDISON - An unpredictable, yet very philosophical sign who takes on many different voices. (There is a Jim Carrey/Robin Williams element to her.) One minute she’s Buddha-like, the next she is a Game Show host. She helps OLDER CHRIS connect to parts of his childhood he has left behind. She is an eccentric artist. Doubles as ADDISON- Female – 25 years old. YOUNG CHRIS’ older sister. Keeps to herself, and has attitude for days. Has a small chip on her shoulder, loves raunchy language and giving side-eye to everyone. Cares for YOUNG CHRIS in her own special way. Is the butt of the joke to her older siblings JOSEPHINE and DARLA. Vocal range C#4 – B5 (strong legit to B5).
CAPRICORN – Should be cast as a believable teenager. She appears in the form of the Child-like Empress from the Never-ending story. (A loose interpretation, not an exact imitation.) She teaches OLDER CHRIS that though the healing journey is long and difficult, there needs to be time for play. She connects him directly with YOUNG CHRIS. Vocal range F#3 - E5.
AQUARIUS - An eccentric sign who may or may not be high. (Matthew McConaughey/ Melissa Ethridge vibes) She connects OLDER CHRIS and YOUNG CHRIS to the spiritual side of their lives and teaches them how important a Mantra can be to retain their connection. Vocal range G3 - E5.
PISCES / JOSEPHINE - A mysterious sign, a master of divination, has one foot in this world, and one in another. She teaches OLDER CHRIS and YOUNG CHRIS an important, but difficult lesson about his father, and about compassion. Doubles as JOSEPHINE – Female – 28 years old - YOUNG CHRIS’ older sister. Ready for a fight, always. Very confrontational, loud, touch and full of attitude, even more-so than ADDISON. Everything is designed to be against her, and she feels she must fight for herself. Always storming on or off. Cares for YOUNG CHRIS in her own special way. Vocal range G#3 - C#5.
