FIONA “MOMO” BLAKE (Female, 79) Erik’s mother, grandmother to Brigid and Aimee. Has been afflicted with dementia. For the most part, she remains passive and disconnected but has episodes where she becomes manic and aggressive.

DEIRDRE BLAKE (Female, 61) Erik’s loyal wife, devoted mother to Brigid and Aimee. With silent strength, she clings wholeheartedly to traditions, familial duty, and the Catholic faith. The institution of marriage is sacred to her; she very much wishes her family shared this sentiment.

ERIK BLAKE (Male, 60) A middle class Irish Catholic, practical to a fault and very set in his ways. He has sacrificed a great deal over the years in order to provide a good life for his family, but his recent confession has upset the comfortable world he knows. He is trying desperately to reconnect with his wife and cling to his increasingly distant daughters.

AIMEE BLAKE (Female, 34) Erik and Deirdre’s eldest daughter. Both self-conscious and self-deprecating, her career as a lawyer once held great promise. Now, her physical and emotional health both suffer. She is deeply, quietly sad and in intense pain following a breakup from her long-term girlfriend.

BRIGID BLAKE (Female, 26) The younger daughter of the Blake clan, well-meaning but often impractical and dreamy. She has recently moved in with Richard and turned her back on Catholicism, much to the chagrin of her parents. She is half-heartedly pursuing a career in music and attempting to live out her perception of a sophisticated adult lifestyle.

RICHARD (Male, 38) A worldly wise graduate student, Richard comes from a wealthy family and has never wanted for anything. Despite their age difference, he truly loves Brigid and yearns to be accepted by her family.

MEMPHIS LEE – (Male, African American, 50’s-60’s) Owner of the restaurant. A self-made man whose values of hard work, diligence, persistence, and honesty have been consistently challenged by the circumstances of his life. Strong sense of self-worth.

WOLF – (Male, African American, 30’s) A numbers runner. He is a man who enjoys his notoriety and popularity. While he manages to keep money in his pocket, his inability to find secure female companionship is the single failure that marks his life.

RISA THOMAS – (Female, African American, 20s) An employee at Memphis’ restaurant, seeking to be loved for more than just her looks. Melancholy, but soulful, she has a self-realized wisdom about her.

HOLLOWAY – (Male, African American, 50’s-60’s) A regular customer at the restaurant. All his life he has voiced his outrage at injustice with little effect. His belief in the supernatural has enabled him to accept his inability to effect change and continue to pursue life with zest and vigor.

HAMBONE – (Male, African American, 40’s) A frequent visitor to the restaurant. He is self-contained and in a world of his own. His mental conditions has deteriorated to such a point that he can only say two phrases, and he repeats them over and over.

STERLING – (Male, African American, late 20’s-early 30’s) Recently released from jail after a bank robbery, he appears carefree and ambitious. He cares little about his seemingly limited circumstances and prefers to dream big. He can slick-talk his way into just about anything, but has good intentions at his core. Pursues Risa.

WEST – (Male, African American, 50’s-60s) A conservative prominent businessman who runs a funeral home. Since his wife’s death, he has allowed his love of money to overshadow the other possibilities of life. Despite his wealth, he wears three year old shoes with the heels worn, but they are always polished.

MARVELOUS CHINYARAMWIRA (MAI TENDI) (Female, African American, mid 60s) An African matriarch who runs the perfect American home. She and her husband DONALD live in a upper-middle class suburb of Minneapolis. She holds a PhD and is the department chair of a university’s biochemistry department currently studying DNA and inheritance. She is poised, sophisticated and purposed, very driven by decorum and propriety, but conveniently and blissfully unaware of her own potent capabilities in impropriety when sufficiently provoked.

DONALD CHINYARAMWIRA (BABA TENDI) (Male, African American, mid 60s) An African man. MARVELOUS’ husband, and a partner in a law firm with his daughter TENDIKAYI. He is a gentle, distinguished man. While he seems quieter than the ladies in the house, he is, we learn, no less passionate. He loves his squash and football.

MARGARET MUNYEWA (MAI TONGAI) (Female, African American, 50s) An African woman. MARVELOUS’ youngest sister. She is also a PhD and a geology professor, but can’t seem to settle down with tenure. She is a compulsive spender and is very good at hiding a drinking problem. She feels very torn between her American life and her heritage.

NYASHA (Female, African American, late 20s) American-Zimbabwean young woman. First generation American. MARVELOUS and DONALD’s youngest daughter and the baby of the family. She is stylish in an Erikah Badu, India Arie type of way, with a funky natural haircut and funky Afrocentric jewelry. She is the epitome of New York artiste –both a singer/songwriter and a feng shui expert.

TENDIKAYI (TENDI) (Female, African American, 30s) American-Zimbabwean woman. First generation American. CHRIS's fiancé, MARVELOUS and DONALD’s oldest daughter. Devout Christian. Lawyer in a firm with her father. Struggling to come to terms with her heritage. Elects to observe a traditional Zimbabwean wedding ritual but is using church friends, instead of her family, as bridesmaids.

ANNE (MAI CAROL) (Female, African American, 60s) An African woman. MARVELOUS’ older sister. Works as a nurse in Zimbabwe, but due to Zim’s economic downturn, is totally broke. Skeptical of American culture and zealous about preserving Zimbabwean customs. Unabashedly loud with her divisive and volatile presence. Equally scheming and truth-telling. The force that disrupts MARVELOUS’ plan for the wedding.

CHRIS (Male, mid 30s) A Caucasian American man, TENDIKAYI’s fiancé. He co-founded an international non-profit for human rights, and spends a lot of his time involved with humanitarian aid efforts in South Asia and western Africa. He bends over backwards to show his respect for his fiancé’s family and heritage. He and TENDI are members of an active church group.

BRAD (Male, mid 30s) A Caucasian American man, CHRIS’ younger brother. He is in the military, where he worked on conflict resolution. He is a little brash, but also funny and charming. Pretty clueless about Zimbabwean culture and customs. Attracted to and pursuing NYASHA.

CONNIE (SHOOTING GUARD) (Female, Asian American, 25) Chinese American, Manford's cousin and UC Berkeley grad student. Level-headed, big picture. A Chris Paul/Klay Thompson type.

WEN CHANG (SMALL FORWARD) (Male, Asian American, 43) Chinese, coach of Beijing University's men's basketball team. Observant, efficient. Favors three pointers over aggressive inside shots. Tim Duncan would appreciate his energy. (His English is formal, but relatively unaccented.)

SAUL (POWER FORWARD)( Male, 52) Jewish, coach of University of San Francisco's men's basketball team. a shit-talking, shotblocking, washed up Larry Byrd.

MACBETH (Female, 17-25) Impetuous, passionate, susceptible to dreams of power and glory, she puts aside all morals in order to fulfill her ambitions.

LADY MACBETH (Female, 17-25) Fiery, nimble and fiercely intelligent. She is a deeply ambitious woman who wants position and power. She falls victim to madness as she cannot handle reality and humanity.

BANQUO (Female, 17-25) Macbeth’s constant and upstanding best friend. She is equally ambitious to Macbeth but does not succumb to the temptations that Macbeth does.

MACDUFF (Female, 17-25) The ultimate protagonist, fierce and good hearted. Always genuine, and though she is physically imposing, she is easy to empathize with.

WITCH 1 (Female, 17-25)

WITCH 2 (Female, 17-25)

WITCH 3 (Female, 17-25)

Superficial and self obsessed without any moral boundaries. They are intimidating and strong, and though they have a fascination of occult, there is nothing gothic about them.
