SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION
SYNOPSIS: 16th century Venice is the setting for a fearless exploration of sexual politics and the tension between personal ambition and moral responsibility. The rebel painter Galactia is commissioned by the Doge to paint a vast canvas celebrating a triumphant battle. The results defy expectation, as does this play.
Please note: This production contains required moments of intimacy and will have an intimacy
coordinator involved periodically in the rehearsal process.
All actors will have additional roles from the play (such as workers, Goaler, Pastaccio, man in next cell, Sailor 1,2,3, Sordo, Official, Lasagne, etc.) assigned to them with casting.
Galactia: Female-Identifying character. 46 years old. Hired by the City-State of 17th century Venice to paint the Battle of Lepanto. Her ferocious approach to the art is counterbalanced by her exquisite skill. Will not capitulate to the desires of her donors and paints the truth of The Battle of Lepanto with a realism that has never been created before. Ferociously sensual, full of rage, and caught in the machinations of power.
Urgentino: Male-Identifying character. Age range: 40-65. The Doge of Venice. The political head that must navigate the interplay of between the powers of religion, the military, and the public. He is an absolute lover of art, and capable of taking great risks for the betterment of Venice.
Supporta: Female-identifying character. Age Range: 20-27. Fifth daughter of Galactia. An apprentice to her mother, she has a keen awareness of how her mother’s work has been interpreted by society. In an effort to help her mother she tries to warn her of the days ahead only to be met with indifference.
Dementia: Female-identifying character. Age Range: 18-24. Daughter of Galactia. An apprentice to her mother, Dementia is disgusted by the profession.
Gina Rivera: Female-identifying character. Age Range: 30-70. A critic. Has political alliances that give her power. She is able to rub elbows with the Doge as well as Galactia. She is smart and able to see the bigger picture. Deeply believes in art, as well as the ruthless criticism of it.
Carpeta: Male-identifying character. Age Range: 30 – 45. Married, and the lover of Galactia. A painter with ambition and passion, but also one that is limited by his understanding of the world. He deeply loves Galactia—lives in a deep reverence of her talent and power. Has pity for the world, and it unravels his art – it makes him indecisive. Is a victim of his love to Galactia, despite, ultimately, her being completely in love with him. Nudity involved.
Suffici: Male-Identifying character. Age Range: 30-45. Younger brother of Urgentino. Has a compassionate face. An Admiral in the Venetian Army, including in the Battle of Lepanto. Has secrets and lives with a true love of art.
Ostensible: Male-Identifying character. Age Range: 45-75. A cardinal in the Church. Smart. Strategizing. Aware of the power of the people, and what is necessary to funnel their power. Does not take threats lightly. Doesn’t understand art. Doesn’t like it.
Prodo: Male-Identifying character. Age Range: 25-55. A veteran soldier in the Battle of Lepanto for the Venetian Army and ends up with an arrow stuck through his head. He now charges money to sit for scientists and artists so they can examine his unique battle wound up close. A survivor. An optimist.
Sketchbook: Female-identifying character. Age Range: 28-65. The voice of the painting. An Art Historian. Her character is set in modern day, describing Galactia’s painting in a cultivated narration, direct address. She captures moments in the creation of the painting, allowing us insight into its design and history.
