NOTE: As a family navigates a tricky holiday season riddled with sibling rivalries, anxiety, and suppressed resentments, physical “rules” that the characters must follow are introduced one by one (ex: “Matthew must sit to tell a lie”). While physical comedy is important, performing each character truthfully is key.
[MATTHEW] he/him, white, 30s. CARRIE’s boyfriend, ADAM’s brother, DEBORAH & FRANCIS’s son. The younger brother in the family and a lawyer who’s just made full partner; he’s doing all the right things to move up in the world, but what/who he really wants is always just out of reach. Once dreamed of becoming an actor, but his father had other plans for him.
[CARRIE] she/her, any ethnicity, 30s. MATTHEW’s girlfriend. A newcomer to the family’s Christmas celebrations, her anxiety to make the visit a success is palpable. An aspiring actor, she’s loud, baudy, and routinely tells jokes at the wrong time to ease tensions… it does not work.
[ADAM] he/him, white, 40s. NICOLE’s husband, EMMA’s father, MATTHEW’s brother, DEBORAH & FRANCIS’s son. A former baseball player who still longs for the life that might have been. The older brother, also a lawyer but trailing behind his younger brother in professional achievements. Has undiagnosed ADHD which creates problems in his relationship. He is doing his best to stay afloat.
[NICOLE] she/her, any ethnicity, 40s. ADAM’s wife and EMMA’s mother. The practical member of the family, she copes with the frustrations and anxieties of family life with a little too much drinking. Frustrated with her husband and fiercely protective of her daughter, she has read ALL the parenting articles.
[DEBORAH] she/her, white, 60s, FRANCIS’s wife and mother of ADAM and MATTHEW. Rigid and intense, she has planned family Christmas with military precision. An obsessive cleaner, she does her very best to hold her tongue – it does not always work. In her eyes her husband can do no wrong, and she will defend him to the ends of the earth.
[FRANCIS] he/him, white, 70s, DEBORAH’s husband, father of ADAM and MATTHEW. He is, and always has been, the head of this house. Recently suffered a stroke (under mysterious and somewhat seedy circumstances) and now struggles to speak and be understood. Ornery, demanding, and somewhat of a dirty old man.
