Breakdown
KAY MORGAN:
55 to 60 female, divorced, attractive but not flashy, educated and classy WASP-y woman living in a comfortable and well-appointed Upper-East-Side apartment. She’s content with her low-key life as it is these days.
PENNY MORGAN:
32, Kay’s daughter, stylish, businesswoman (corporate lawyer), smart and aggressive in her work. Devoted to her late father and protective of her mother. Single, living alone, and successful in her work, there’s something missing in her life.
FIORE BENEDETTO:
35 to 40, attractive (but not overly so) and charming native Italian, private language instructor. Must have an Italian accent and speak accurate Italian. A poet at heart, he supports himself with his teaching.
ROMANCE LANGUAGE (Joe Godfrey) is a contemporary family drama. Penny Morgan, 32, single, a successful corporate lawyer, is concerned that her mother, Kay, 55-60, widowed and living alone on the upper east side of Manhattan, is letting her life come to a halt. When Kay agrees to Penny's urgings to take Italian language lessons, however, things change quickly. The lessons between the teacher, Fiore Benedetto, 40, and Kay develop into something more, and Penny is not sure at all that she approves. As in Italian opera, passion, jealousy, and perhaps even vendetta drive the play toward its conclusion. (Two acts...about 90 minutes)
