[CLARENCE/TYRELL]
Male, Late 30’s through 40’s Clarence is a gentle and trusting man and father. He is the middle brother, between King Edward and Richard. Symbolizes goodness, gentle strength, and empathy. He is a thinking man. Tyrell: A murderer whom Richard hires to kill his young cousins, the princes in the Tower of London. Must have great skill with language.
[STANLEY]
Male, 50’s. The stepfather of Richmond, he is Political and strategic. He is an honest man with a good heart, as far as he can afford to be. Greatly disturbed by the corruption of Richard’s government and acutely aware that no one is safe. Moral, measured, and strong – A politician on the right side of history. Must have great skill with language.
[KING EDWARD/RATCLIFFE]
Male, 40’s. King Edward: the older brother of Richard and Clarence, and the king of England at the start of the play. He is kind and devoted King, husband and father. Dedicated to achieving resolution among the various political factions of his reign. He is unaware that Richard attempts to thwart him at every turn. Ratcliffe: A chief supporter of Richard III, and his major executioner at the time of his coup. He is loyal, and stays faithful to Richard even when mistreated. He takes care of the deaths of Rivers, Grey, Vaughn and Lord Hastings. Must have great skill with language. May Understudy

Male OR female Late 20’s – Late 30’s. In this production the character of Richmond is a Latinx. Strong, determined, a force to be reckoned with. S/he represents goodness, justice, and equality—all the things Richard does not. S/he gathers an army of rebels to challenge Richard for the throne. Must have great skill with language. May Understudy
[FIRST MURDERER/SCRIVENER]
Male, 30’s-40’s First Murderer is a man of physical size. By the order of Richard, he carries out the homicide of Richard’s older brother Clarence. Not the brightest bulb, and full of brute strength. Scrivener: Kind, and a man of conscience, he is sickened by the wrongs done by Richard’s corrupt government. Hired to write up the official explanation for Hasting’s execution, for public posting, and realizes clearly that the explanation is a complete lie. Must have great skill with language.
