Performers of all races and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.

PREPARATION

Please prepare two contrasting 2-minute monologues from contemporary African American canon. Please provide a headshot and resume upon arrival for your audition.

SYNOPSIS: Langston Hughes' Black Nativity tells the story of the Nativity from an African American perspective through a combination of scripture, poetry, dance and song with griot style narration.

PARADISE BLUE

SYNOPSIS: Paradise Blue is a play by Dominique Morisseau set in 1949 Detroit that explores the destruction of the Black business community in Paradise Valley due to a Housing Act. The play is about Blue, a talented jazz club owner who plays the trumpet, and his decision to sell his club to gentrification. The play also features Blue's girlfriend Pumpkin, who cooks and cleans at the club, as well as Corn, the pianist, and P-Sam, the drummer. The play's plot also includes a mysterious woman from Louisiana who may have murdered her husband

PUMPKIN - (Pre-cast) Black woman. Late 20s. Pretty in a plain way. Simple. Sweet. Waitress, cook, and caretaker of Paradise Club. A loving thing with a soft touch. Adores poetry.

BLUE - (Pre-cast) Black man. Early to mid 30s. Handsome. Mysterious. Sexy. Quiet danger. Aloof. A hard shell and a hard interior. Battling many demons. A gifted trumpeter.

CORN - (Pre-cast) Black man. Late 40s to Early 50s. Slightly chubby. (aka Cornelius) Easygoing and Thoughtful. A real sweetheart with a weakness for love. The piano man.

P-SAM - (Pre-cast) Black man. Mid to Late 30s. Busybody. Sweet-talker. (aka Percussion Sam) Hustler. Always eager for his next gig. The percussionist.

SILVER - Black woman. Mid to Late 30s. Mysterious. Sexy. Charming. Spicy woman. Gritty and raw in a way that men find irresistible. Has a meeeeaaaannn walk.

UNTITLED FABLE

SYNOPSIS: Two lovers are separated at sea. In search of his lost companion, one man crosses an ocean guided only by his yearning and the coaxing of the wind, sun, moon, and a trickster fish. Love’s newest fable is an achingly poignant and sometimes funny meditation on the passage of time and the persistence of love – a hopeful prayer that what we seek finds us.
