NOTE: This show takes place during an era of segregation. All of the characters below are Black Americans.
Jelly Roll Morton: (mid 30s-40s) The son of racially mixed Creole parents, this pioneer jazz composer, pianist and bandleader exudes charm. Able to sing and tap dance.
Chimney Man: (35-60) Lean chief jurist: a mysterious, raffish agent of the supernatural. Able to sing, tap dance preferrable.
Young Jelly: (teens) Exudes as much charm as his older self. Creole. Strong vocal and tap skills.
Buddy Bolden/Announcer: (25-35) An impassioned man known as “The Father of Jazz” who feeds into his/others addictions.
Jack the Bear: (25-35) Jelly’s best friend. Full of dignified and warm-hearted southern charm, he is an easy going man and a strong singer.
Gran Mimi: (50-65) Jelly’s strict grandmother, Creole.
Anita: (25-35) Jelly’s strong-willed and capricious girlfriend. The daughter of racially mixed Creole parents. Strong vocal abilities.
Melrose Brothers (2): fast-talking, fast-dancing, ex-vaudevillians turned music publishers. Has strong tap skills.
