Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.
We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities.

Billy Elliot: Male, 10-13. A little boy against a big, nasty, world. Billy stumbles upon a ballet class and develops a passion for dance. To Billy, dance is a way to feel whole and free from the problems of life. He finds himself stuck between appeasing family and chasing his newfound love.
Michael: Male, 10-13. Billy's fun-loving best friend. He lives in the realm of expressing oneself and loves to dress in dresses and lace.
Mrs. Wilkinson: Female, 40s-50s. The local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy's mentor. She has capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy and believes in the power of personal expression through dance.
Dad: Male, 35-45. Billy's father. A widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of a work strike, he is still deeply scarred by the death of his wife. Initially unable to understand Billy’s new passion, eventually learns to support him.
Tony: Male, 18-25. Billy's brother. A passionate miner. Hotheaded and scrappy and shares his father’s disapproval of dance.
Grandma: Female, 60s-75. Billy's eccentric grandmother. Forgetful and aloof. Despite her inattention, shares Billy’s love of dance.
Debbie Wilkinson: Female, 9-12. Mrs. Wilkinson’s daughter. A bit stand-offish and argumentative, a childhood crush on Billy leads her to constantly discourage him.
George: Male, 45-65. The local boxing teacher and fellow minor on strike.
Dream Billy/Dancer at the Royal Ballet School: Male, 20s-30s. An idealized version of Billy in the future. A professional ballet dancer.
Adult Ensemble: Any Gender, All Ages. Miners, Police Officers, Royal Ballet School Members.
Young Performer Ensemble: Any Gender, 7-14. Including - Ballet Girls in Billy’s ballet class of varying levels of skill. Tall Boy/Posh Boy- A boy in Billy’s boxing class and later a posh boy at the Royal Ballet School. Small Boy- a very small lad who loves to swear in Billy’s boxing class.

Carole King: Female, plays 18-30. An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, funny, and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a deep passion for music.
Gerry Goffin: Male, plays 18-30. Carole’s songwriting partner, and eventual romantic partner and husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more.
Barry Mann: Male, plays 18-30. An ambitious songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. Good natured and neurotic.
Cynthia Weil: Female, plays 18-30. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. Sophisticated, smart, and chic with a quick wit. Self-confident and sarcastic.
Don Kirschner: Male, 40s-50s. An influential music publisher and producer. A fast talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct, and sometimes intimidating, but has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker.
Genie Klein: Female, 40s-50s. Carole’s mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life and her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes.
ENSEMBLE: Any Gender, 20s-40s. To play various singers, song writers, and pop groups from the 50s and 60s.
