SYNOPSIS: Written by and starring the MacArthur genius and incomparable force of theatrical nature Taylor Mac, Prosperous Fools, inspired by Molière’s Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, is a brilliant and courageous exploration of philanthropy and its hypocrisies; a retooled comedy of manners for an age with no manners.
NOTE: All genders, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition.
ARTIST: Character is male. Between 40 and 60. Pure and naive. NOTE: Taylor Mac is playing the ARTIST, but people are still welcome to come and audition for the role.
INTERN: Character is female. 20s. Nerdy but caustic.
PHILANTHROPOID: Character is female. Between 40 and 60. The theater’s Artistic Director.
#@$%$ (THE OLIGARCH): Character is a white male. Between 50 and 70. A philanthropic billionaire. Think of someone who might run the Kennedy Center.
STAGE MANAGER: Character is female. Any age. May double as a dancer/supernumerary/Piccolo Player (off-stage voice). Very few lines but very good at noises and voices.
POT-BELLIED CHILD: A small pot-bellied child with a lisp. Any gender. 10 years old or younger. NOTE: The actor need not have a “pot-belly,” it will be conveyed by a costume piece; any body type will be considered.
####: Character is female. A movie star turned humanitarian. Between 30 and 60. Flamboyantly self-absorbed.
THREE FEMALE BALLET DANCERS: Female presenting. Classically trained ballerinas. 20s to mid 30s.
ONE MALE BALLET DANCER: Male presenting. Classically trained. 20s to mid 30s.
