Breakdown

Note: The play is written in an unabashed 19th-century style, and requires actors with verbal dexterity and language skills suited to classical drama.

SEEKING:

Henrik Ibsen
The great Norwegian playwright in his 70's. Henrik is a short, irascible and contentious man with a formidable intellect, and a vain streak. He is severe and worldly; when angry, he can display the petulance and stubbornness of a child. From a distance, he inspires both fear and reverence, and he uses that to his advantage. Underneath his hard exterior, he’s a man brimming with regret, surprising compassion, and an ever-growing fear of death. Based on the actual Henrik Ibsen.

Gustav Vigeland
A sculptor, 30s-40s. Gustav is ferociously driven and passionate about his work, sometimes at the expense of gentler niceties. He has charm and magnetism; sexy and impetuous, and with relentless drive. He’s also physically strong; he can carve marble, and cast massive figures in bronze. He is wildly articulate, quick witted, with a certain devilish charm, and flatters himself quite persuasive. Based on the real-life Gustav Vigeland, Norway’s most celebrated and visionary sculptor.

The following roles have been CAST. Actors will be considered for possible replacements if needed:

Greta Bergstrøm
A housemaid in her 70's. Though uneducated, she boasts a keen intelligence and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. She’s been alive for a great many years, and seen a great many things. She has a dawning political conscience, too, and falls staunchly on the side of the proletariat. In secret, she models for Gustav Vigeland, who carved several haunting figures of elderly females. (Brief nudity.) CAST

Anfinn Beck
Anfinn is Vigeland’s apprentice in his early 20's. His virility and cockiness make him the envy of men whose best years are already past. He waxes about art with all the brio and all the naiveté of someone who’s just discovered its power. His radiant grin and good humor usually get him off the hook. If 19th Century Norway had a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, well, that would be Anfinn’s milieu. (Brief nudity.) CAST

Sophus Larpent
A patron of the arts, 50s-60s. He's good-natured but high-strung, with the comic energy of a Leo Bloom. Easily shocked, he’s flummoxed by Gustav’s nude statuary. Unmarried and of indeterminate sexuality, he is a compulsive collector of art; it’s what imbues his life with meaning. Officious, perhaps even a bit prissy, but with a good heart. Sophus Larpent is an actual historical figure, and solicited work for Gustav Vigeland. CAST
