OUR TOWN

SEEKING:

[STAGE MANAGER] 30s-50s, any gender identity, any race/ethnicity. The narrator, guide, and occasional participant in the story. Wry, warm, and direct with the audience. Breaks the fourth wall and provides commentary on life in Grover’s Corners. Requires strong storytelling skills, command of language, and an easy rapport with the audience.

[DR. GIBBS] 40s–50s, male, any race/ethnicity. The town doctor, dependable, calm, and wise. Devoted husband and father to George and Rebecca. Values family, community, and the steady rhythms of small-town life.

[MRS. GIBBS] 40s–50s, female, any race/ethnicity. Warm, practical, and loving. Has dreams of traveling beyond Grover’s Corners but accepts the life she leads. Mother to George and Rebecca.

[GEORGE GIBBS] Late teens–early 20s, male, any race/ethnicity. Kind, earnest, and hardworking. A star baseball player with dreams of becoming a farmer. His journey follows young love, marriage, and the realities of adult life.

[REBECCA GIBBS] 18+ to play early-to-mid teens, female, any race/ethnicity. George’s younger sister. Bright, curious, and playful, with flashes of youthful insight.

[MR. WEBB] 40s–50s, male, any race/ethnicity. Editor of the local paper. Intelligent, principled, and dryly humorous. Father to Emily and Wally.

[MRS. WEBB] 40s–50s, female, any race/ethnicity. A caring, detail-oriented mother with a practical streak. Proud of her home and devoted to her family.

[EMILY WEBB] 18+ to play late teens–early 20s, female, any race/ethnicity. Bright, idealistic, and deeply feeling. Falls in love with George and faces the universal passage from youth to adulthood. The emotional heart of the play.

[WALLY WEBB] 18+ to play early–mid teens, male, any race/ethnicity. Emily’s younger brother. Cheerful, spirited, and energetic.

[SIMON STIMSON] 30s–50s, male, any race/ethnicity. The church choir director. Cynical, troubled, and struggles with alcoholism. Offers a darker counterpoint to the town’s optimism.

[MRS. SOAMES] 30s–50s, female, any race/ethnicity. A town gossip, friendly but prone to chatter. Offers comic relief and commentary on local affairs.

[HOWIE NEWSOME] 20s–40s, male, any race/ethnicity. The milkman. Cheerful and steady, a familiar presence in daily town life. Often accompanied by his imaginary horse, Bessie.

[CONSTABLE WARREN] 30s–50s, male, any race/ethnicity. The town policeman. Good-natured and grounded, knows everyone in Grover’s Corners.

[PROFESSOR WILLARD] 40+, any gender identity, any race/ethnicity. An academic from the State University who provides factual details about Grover’s Corners. Precise, a bit pedantic, and slightly awkward.

[JOE CROWELL, JR.] 18+ to play teens, male, any race/ethnicity. The paperboy. Bright and personable, with a hint of tragic foreshadowing about his future.

[SI CROWELL] 18+ to play teens, male, any race/ethnicity. Joe’s younger brother, who later takes over the paper route.

[SAM CRAIG] 20s–30s, male, any race/ethnicity. Emily’s cousin. Returns to Grover’s Corners for her funeral, offering an outsider’s perspective.

[JOE STODDARD] 40s–60s, male, any race/ethnicity. The town undertaker. Practical, respectful, and matter-of-fact about death.

[ENSEMBLE ROLES] Any age, any gender identity, any race/ethnicity. Townspeople, choir members, and wedding guests. Some roles may be doubled within the ensemble.
